Gradience drops their Metal Blade debut track and video “Master To The Slave”

Danish outfit Gradience have dropped a new single, “Master To The Slave,” alongside a companion video, offering the first glimpse of material from their forthcoming full-length on Metal Blade Records.

The band occupies genuinely unusual territory — colliding apocalyptic, sludgy blackened death metal with dark urban trap-rap, held together by disarmingly intimate vocal lines and a sound picture layered with glacial synths and hypnotic detail. It is a collision that could easily feel forced, but in the hands of Gradience, it emerges from a real and organic creative partnership. Guitarist Jakob Harris and vocalist Gavin Mistry first connected at a Copenhagen show in 2022 and quickly found common ground despite coming from vastly different musical backgrounds. Harris describes their approach as instinctive rather than calculated. “It just feels completely natural for us to mix everything,” he explains. “Rap is just a tool we use to convey an emotion or feel, just like we use screams and melody.”

“Master To The Slave” channels that ethos directly, with Harris describing the track as an exploration of Mistry’s personal struggle with self-destructiveness. The video leans into that theme visually, building to a striking moment where a hangman’s noose transforms into a crown of rope — Mistry gaining the upper hand over what threatens to consume him.

With Metal Blade Records behind them and a full album on the way. Watch the video below.

Speaking on the band’s sound, Harris explained that mixing styles feels completely natural for Gradience, and that rap, melody, and screams are all simply tools used to communicate emotion. Rather than chasing a fixed genre tag, the band focuses on what best serves the energy and feeling of each song, aiming to create a deeper emotional connection through heavy music.

On the meaning behind the new single, Harris said that “Master To The Slave” deals with Mistry’s struggle with self-destructive tendencies. He added that the video was designed to act as a physical manifestation of that internal war, with one of its defining visual moments transforming a hangman’s noose into a rope crown to symbolize taking control over something that could otherwise become destructive.

Their debut album information will be released soon by Metal Blade Records.
