EP REVIEW: No Cure – I Hope I Die Here

Alabama is a state with a very well-known identity and stereotype, often ascribed as being synonymous with the uneducated, right-wing conservative types. It is aspirational that the hardcore troup, No Cure, want to change that for the better. All bands have gotta start somewhere, and with a list of features, your arm’s length, No Cure certainly are reaching high with their brand new EP I Hope I Die Here (SharpTone Records).

Only consisting of roughly 15 minutes, the band have no time to waste to put their message out there with the aptly titled first song “Hang Me From The Bible Belt” This punchy, rip-roaring song matches the furious energy of any metallic hardcore band you can name, with the filth derived from death metal bands such as Dying Fetus creating one heavy track that could cause a mosh pit in an old folks home. The song acts as a standing statement for the mission the band are trying to accomplish, not only by criticising the grasp the bible belt has over the state, but also the band’s identity being undoubtedly linked to the area.

The highlight from the album comes from the song “Your Children Will Burn In The Burning River.” Harnessing all of the ferocity the band has to offer, the band jam-pack it in a tight 2 minutes that make you wish it was longer. The track is pure filth, filled with some of the best vocal performances from Blaythe Steuer bellowing out “CRUCIFY ME ON A CROOKED CROSS” This is undoubtedly the song that will cause nothing but carnage on the live circuit.

This rollercoaster of an EP will have you wishing that it was a couple minutes or songs longer. From start to finish, the band plough through some of the filthiest hardcore songs, managing the task of mixing death metal and hardcore with aplomb. The debut album which is hopefully on the horizon will be the first true test of longevity for the band, but if they match the energy of this release, it’s a no-brainer that it will blow minds.
