Nordberg holds “Prelude: Eternity” close. “‘Prelude: Eternity’ is probably my favorite track on the record,” he says. “It was such a feel-good writing session, and a lot of good came from it.”

Mazurkiewicz formed Umbilicus in the summer of 2020, and the band wrote ten songs that first year. He also writes the band’s lyrics. The group draws on late-sixties and early-seventies hard rock, a world away from its members’ death metal day jobs in death metal. Mazurkiewicz names Grand Funk Railroad, Bad Company, Steppenwolf, Sir Lord Baltimore, and Lucifer’s Friend as touchstones. His goal is simple: “just play some pure hard rock!”

The final piece fell into place when the band found singer Brian Stephenson, ending Mazurkiewicz’s search for “an awesome voice to tie it all together.” As he puts it, “It is just so much fun to sit back and groove out.” Ambiguous is the band’s first EP and its first release with Listenable Insanity.

Ghost Cult covered the band’s launch here.
