Frisson Noir marks Tarja Turunen’s tenth solo studio album and sixth metal record, and her heaviest yet. The album takes its name from the French word for the physical shiver music sends through the body: that instant when sound stops being just sound and becomes emotion, memory, and sensation. Seven years after her last full studio release in the heavier spectrum, Tarja returns with renewed intensity and a deliberate celebration of the human element in music, real performances, breath, imperfection, and uncontrolled emotion.
Produced by Tarja and Mic and mixed by Grammy-winning producer Neal Avron, known for his work with Linkin Park, Skillet, and Disturbed, at The Casita in Hollywood, California, the album was mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound. Orchestrations were performed by the Budapest Art Orchestra and Budapest Art Choir, conducted by Gyorgy Gulyas Nagy, and recorded at Opera Eiffel Art Studio. Dani Filth’s vocals on “I Don’t Care” were recorded and produced by Scott Atkins at Grindstone Studio. Artwork is by Dirk Rudolph, with paintings by Katariina Souri and photography by Tim Tronckoe.
The guest list is staggering. Marko Hietala, also a former Nightwish member, appears on “Leap of Faith”; Apocalyptica brings their strings to “Tango”; and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers drums on “Against the Odds.” Additional collaborators include Mervi Myllyoja and Niklas Pokki on “At Sea,” the album’s first single; Sayo Komada on “The Trace Outlives”; and Julián Bedmar and Valter Freitas on “Anemoia.”
Frisson Noir is available in multiple formats, including a strictly limited Collectors Box Set strictly limited to 1,000 units worldwide, which includes a black 2LP gatefold with 24-page booklet, a CD digipak with 28-page booklet, a box-set exclusive 7″ vinyl with solo and Dani mix versions of “I Don’t Care,” postcards, a poster, and a fine art print signed by Tarja. A limited purple 2LP edition is also available, limited to 4,000 copies worldwide. Tarja heads out on the Frisson Live 2026 tour across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland this autumn.
