Casket Robbery – Evolution of Evil

Casket Robbery Evolution Of Evil album cover 2016

Just when I was thinking to myself that the death metal scene may not see another great newcomer for a handful of years, Evolution of Evil (Mortal Music), the full length début from Casket Robbery, forced its way into my ears. The Madison, Wisconsin natives have found a great sound that sits right in the middle of brutal death metal and technical death metal. The riffs and hooks are catchy as hell but avoid being too technical yet not overly simplistic. The tempos across tracks changes up quite a bit and really helps give each track its own personality like the serial killers in the lyrics of some of the songs.

Trying to pick out favorites on this record proved to be quite difficult but I was able to narrow in on a couple. ‘Curse of the Night Stalker’ may be one of the best tracks overall with its split personality. The main riff is very aggressive which will be sure to sprout up some nasty pits. However, the chorus/bridge hooks are so epic and catchy your head will spin (nailed that pun). For the brutal fans, ‘Malevolent Milwaukee Massacre’ is one of the heavier/slower tracks on Evolution of Evil and it is a neck breaker for sure. Fair warning to the elitists, the bridge busts out some sweet djent licks that I found to be brow raising (which is a good thing).

Like a few other albums I have listened to over the past couple of years, I find the best albums just end too soon. Casket Robbery packs ten tracks together on Evolution of Evil but only abuses you for thirty-five minutes. I guess the saying is true, “Quality, not quantity.” Either way, I was left scratching for more and may even need to look into finding the band’s EP released a few years ago to hold me over. There are a lot of death metal albums due out over the course of 2016, but the bar has been set. Casket Robbery is here to stay, folks.

Warbringer Banned From Performing At Upcoming House Of Blues Anaheim Gig

warbringer

Apparently in the fine tradition the Disney owned House of Blues has maintained, Warbringer has joined the list of bands who have been banned from playing there.

“So a special announcement from the folks at Disney Inc,
Warbringer has been banned from the show with Meshuggah on April 13th at the House of Blues Anaheim.
The show will proceed but we won’t be on it. Our band name/image/lyrical content are somehow objectionable to proper Disney image and family values. We are not told of specifically why.
We will still appear the following day at the San Diego House of Blues as Disney has nothing to do with that one.
As the person who wrote all our lyrics, I’m not sure how anything I’ve written is worse than:
-the goose-stepping Nazi hyenas from Scar’s song in the lion king
-the racist crows in Dumbo
-Bambi in general (“Mom! Nooo!)
Remember everyone, censorship blows. Hope to see you guys’ support at the Whisky April 30th.
-Kevill“

Singer John Kevill talks gives an update on the band:

“I really thought that the Empires Collapse record cycle ended prematurely due to the departure of (guitarist) John Laux and (drummer) Carlos Cruz. I figured it would be the end of the band, and the end of my life’s work, as I’d really put everything I had into this band”

“I remember on the last show we played on that US tour (guitarist) Adam Carroll came to me and told me how we had to keep the torch held high and to realize the full potential of the band no matter what. We carried on the following European tour with fill-in members, as we really hate to cancel a gig and let down our fans, but it really seemed like the end for us. Fortunately, though it took a long time, we have been able to find musicians in our area to help carry on the torch of the destructive, intense music this band stands for. So welcome Vicken Hovsepian on drums, Noah Young on guitar, and Alex Malmquist on bass. Our mission since we started rehearsing together was to be the tightest incarnation of the band yet, and to raise the bar and move forward, never back. So far progress has been great and I can’t wait to get out there and unleash this new weapon upon the world.”

Overkill – Kreator- Warbringer – Rope: Live At The Palladium, Worcester MA

HillarieJason1Classic thrash metal hit The Palladium in Worcester, MA on November 1st, when the ‘Legends of Thrash Tour’ rolled into town with heavy hitters Overkill and Kreator headlining and support from the bands Warbringer and Rope. Sound awesome? Damn right it does but unless you knew there was a show going on at the same venue at its upstairs stage, you may have been a bit confused seeing all the scene-ster kids standing around outside, doe eyed, waiting to see some crap-core style bands. It made for an interesting mix of people outside until the whatever-core people figured out they had to enter through the side of the building.

Local band Rope opened the show and I had no clue what to expect. I couldn’t find much about them on-line and had never heard of them. I kind of HillarieJason1-7assumed they were a thrash band based on the others in the line up, but they played a set of straight up metal with maybe a bit of a groovy thing going on in the mix. They sounded pretty tight and other than a few technical issues with some bass equipment, the set went over well for these newcomers. Next up was Warbringer, a thrash band out of California. Although many of the people there were hanging around by the bar, presumably waiting for the legends to hit the stage, the crowd that was on the floor seemed to love these guys. A really large pit started which seemed to reflect the raw energy the band had on stage.

HillarieJason1-6So now, the lights go out for Kreator. By this time the venue was pretty full and the crowd had made their way towards the stage for some German style face melting. Now, I have seen them previously and I’d say they usually put on a good show but at times the sound has been off or something. Not this time at all. A few of my friends mentioned the same thing saying that this is the best they had ever seen them play and they sounded amazing. They opened up with ‘Phantom Antichrist’ and immediately I could tell this one was for the record books because this band was pulling out all the stops. The crowd went nuts for them and not surprisingly a huge circle pit erupted. The lights dimmed a bit towards the end of the set and when they came back up, Millie walked out still donning his Bauhaus shirt (awesome) and waving the ‘Flag of Hate.’ A literal flag.

Overkill came on an opened up with ‘Deny the Cross’ and Bobby Blitz was in tip-top shape. The last time I saw these guys was in February of this year, also at The Palladium in Worcester, but Bobby was so very sick that I was shocked that he even tried to do that show at all. In fact, right after the show Bobby had to be hospitalized he was so ill with pneumonia. Well this was a invigorated, healthy Bobby and there was no stopping these guys from destroying the crowd with everything they’ve got. I got “Blitzed” by a smiling Bobby right off the bat in the photo pit, receiving a solid 10 seconds of his middle finger in my face/camera during ‘Deny the Cross’ and Derek Tailor leaned over during ‘Electric Rattlesnake’ and with a smirk, he looked me in the eye and told me to ‘fuck off.’ I couldn’t tell who was having the better time honestly, the crowd, me, or the band. They ripped mercilessly through the set calling out for the ‘old school’ fans in attendance and generally kicked everyone’s asses.
