The Recording Academy (a.k.a The Grammy Awards) honored the surviving members of Nirvana and Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson with the Recording Academy’s 2023 lifetime achievement award at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles on February 4th. Other honorees included Bobby McFerrin, Ma Rainey, Nile Rodgers, and Slick Rick. The ceremony – the Special Merit Awards ceremony, was presented the day before the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. The lifetime achievement award is presented by vote of the Recording Academy’s national trustees to performers “who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.” Watch the ceremony now!

Joey Jordison of Slipknot and Jon Zazula Get Snubbed by The Grammy Awards’ “In Memoriam” Segment


With all the excitement The Grammy Awards provide every year,  Metal fans are always reminded we matter less than Pop stars. While a great standalone tribe acknowledged Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who passed away at 50 on March 25th,  the televised portion of the Grammy Awards ceremony’s “In Memoriam” segment omitted mention of Metal legends Joey Jordison of Slipknot, and Jon Zazula founder of discoverer of Metallica and founder Megaforce Records. Also omitted, Moody Blues co-founder Graeme Edge. The Recording Academy listed those left out ofthe broadcast along with several hundred other musicians and industry leaders that passed away on the Grammy.com web site under the “The Recording Academy Remembers The Music People We’ve Lost: Grammy In Memoriam” section. The 64th Grammy Awards took place Sunday, April 3, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and were broadcast live on CBS, and hosted by Trevor Noah. Tool, Cage The Elephant, and Gary Clark Jr. Win for Metal and Rock at the 62nd Grammy Awards


The Grammy Awards announced their winners for the Rock and Metal categories for the 2020 award ceremony, their 62nd edition. Tool won for the Best Metal Performance category for the song ‘7empest’ from their album Fear Inoculum (Tool Dissectional/RCA). Tool members Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor were in attendance to collect the award, which was announced before the broadcast portion of the show. Gary Clark Jr. who was nominated over several categories for multiple tracks won both Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for the track ‘This Land’. Best Rock album honors went to Cage the Elephant for Social Cues. In the more pop-orientated Alternative Rock category, Vampire Weekend won, while other Rock and Metal related artists such as Chris Cornell won for the packaging of his posthumous self-titled boxed set, and The Best Instrumental Album went to metal fans and sometimes cover artists Rodrigo y Gabriella for Mettavolution (ATO Records) The 62nd Grammy Awards are once again hosted by Alicia Keys and will air on CBS.

Tool, Bring Me The Horizon, Candlemass, Death Angel, Killswitch Engage, I Prevail and Rival Sons Nominated for The 62rd Grammy Awards


The Grammy Awards announced their nominees for 2020’s award ceremony, the 62nd edition. Among the nominees across the rock and metal categories are Tool, Bring Me The Horizon, Candlemass (featuring Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath), Death Angel, Killswitch Engage, I Prevail, Rival Sons, Cage The Elephant, Karen O, Bon Iver, Gary Clark Junior and more! You can see all the categories and nominees below. Tool has actually won multiple Grammy awards while Death Angel has never been nominated. Bring Me The Horizon has been nominated for their album Amo (Columbia Records). In the more popular categories, pop sensation Billie Eilish was nominated across all the major categories, a rare feat for a teenager. Black Sabbath To Receive A Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award Next Year.


The Recording Academy, the organization behind The Grammys, will give a Lifetime Achievement Award to Black Sabbath next spring, along with George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Billy Eckstine, Donny Hathaway, Julio Iglesias, Sam & Dave, and Dionne Warwick. Although The Grammy’s award both Rock and Metal, these awards have been regulated to the awards not announced on the television broadcast and most rock or metal bands don’t perform on the pop-driven show. Alice In Chains, Ghost, Greta Van Fleet And Bring Me The Horizon Nominated For Grammy Awards


For some reason, The Grammy Awards still give out awards for rock and metal, even though those awards are never shown on the broadcast any longer, and barely any performers are ever featured. Still, that doesn’t stop them from Nominating big names in the genre such as Alice In Chains, Ghost, Greta Van Fleet and Bring Me The Horizon. The 61st annual Grammy Awards, which will be held on on February 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will broadcast live on the CBS television network at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
