When you think of heavy music, images of raw power, defiance, and innovation come to mind—and Black creators have been at the forefront of this movement. Although often underestimated, these innovative musicians are known for their groundbreaking music, which blends punk’s rebellious spirit, metal’s intensity, and unique artistry. I’m a drummer and I’ve done Thrash, Crossover, and Death Metal projects over the years, some known, some not so much. But here in New York, I’ve grown up seeing everyone on stage. So this Black History Month, I want to show off the sounds of ten essential bands shaped by Black visionaries who have left an indelible mark on the world of heavy music. Cro-Mags Share Lyric Video for “The Final Test”


Cro-Mags, one of the founding fathers of Hardcore Punk, will release their first album in 20 years, In The Beginning, will release via Mission Two Entertainment. Led by Harley Flannigan, Cro-Mags have their line-up rounded out with guitarists Rocky George, Gabby Abularach and drummer Garry Sullivan, and the band hit the road last year supporting the reunited Misfits and compiled footage for their first music video in 27 years with “No One’s Victim.” With the state of touring constantly changing, the band is eager to get back out to their fans and are scheduled to perform in Japan this November supporting Circle Jerks with other dates to come. Suicidal-Tendencies-13Suicidal Tendencies first album in thirteen years is the culmination of the legendary hardcore punk/crossover/thrash bands’ resurgence the last few years. The reason the band reached icon status in the first place was their ability to innovate and lead in the early days, change with the times and still be relevant years later. What separates ST from many bands of that era, is that now that they have finally delivered new music, it is as refreshing to hear as it is vital.
