Remembering Dimebag Darrell Abbott of Pantera, Who Died Sixteen Years Ago Today

Today marks the sixteenth anniversary of the murder of Dimebag Darrell Lance Abbott of Pantera and Damageplan while on stage at the Alrosa Villa club in Columbus, Ohio. Although we are sad at the occasion and we prefer to honor how he lived most of all, we can’t overlook the significance of the loss to the world of metal. Somewhere in the world right now, someone is strapping on a guitar and learning to play those songs, licks, and solos, which is at the very least, a comfort to know. As we do every year, we pay tribute to this fallen hero. Jam out to some classic Dimebag and Pantera tracks and raise a glass or smoke (or both) to the legend of legends on guitar! Getcha pull!

Aaron Meltzer, Formerly of Secrets, Has Died

Aaron Meltzer, the one-time frontman, and vocalist of San Diego post-Hardcore band Secrets has died. No cause of death has been revealed. The news was broken on Secrets Facebook page via a post. While Aaron had been out of the band several years, he was on their most successful releases on Rise Records, including 2013’s Fragile Figures. On the strength of that album, the band toured the US with major bands, including Warped Tour 2014. We will keep track of this story as it develops. Rest in Power, Aaron.

Ken Hensley, Keyboardist, and Vocalist with Uriah Heap Has Died

Sad news to report as Ken Hensley, who spent 50 years in Rock and Heavy Metal as keyboardist, guitarist, singer, and composer with bands like Uriah Heap has died. He was 75 years old. No cause of death was reported as yet. The news was shared on social media, by his brother Trevor in a Facebook post. In addition to being an integral part of Uriah Heap in the 1970s, he also worked with Blackfoot, W.A.S.P., and Cinderella, as well as a solo career. As a writer, he created classics as “Lady In Black”, “Easy Livin'”, “July Morning” and “Look At Yourself’ and wrote books about music and his career, including “My Book Of Answers”, which is due for release at the end of February 2021. Rockers React to the Loss of Eddie Van Halen

As we reported earlier, the music world is reeling from the loss of Eddie Van Halen, who died today, October 6th, 2020, at age 65 after a long bout with cancer. The outpouring of love and support has been immense since the news hit social media. Jay White, Bassist For The Agony Scene Has Died

In sudden and sad news, Jay White, bassist of Tulsa, Oklahoma metallers The Agony Scene, has died. No cause of death has been revealed at this time. Jay had been receiving dialysis for an undisclosed condition and there was a gofundme set up to help with medical costs. The band shared their news in a loving message to Facebook. Adam Schlesinger, Co-Founder of Fountains of Wayne, Dies from Coronavirus

Sad news to report as Fountains of Wayne songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Adam Schlesinger, who had been hospitalized while dealing with coronavirus, has died. He was just 52. According to Rolling Stone, Schlesinger’s lawyer, Josh Grier, confirmed the news of his passing. Earlier in the week, Grier had reported that Schlesinger was sick and heavily sedated while also using a ventilator. As a member of Fountains of Wayne, he was nominated for two Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal for the song ‘Stacy’s Mom.’ Fountains of Wayne recorded five albums, with the tracks ‘Stacy’s Mom’ and ‘Radiation Vibe’ being their biggest hits. Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Industrial Music Icon, Had Died at Age 70

Sad news to pass on as avant-garde icon and Industrial Music pioneer Genesis Breyer P-Orridge has died. S/he – h/er was 70 years and passed away following a three year battle with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. The news was confirmed last night to Pitchfork and then shared to social media by Dais Records co-founder (and P-Orridge’s manager) Ryan Martin. As a founding member experimental bands Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV, h/er five decades as a musician, poet, performance artist, and occultist was best known for h/er influential work in the industrial music genre and was often referred to as the “Godparent of Industrial Music.” Not just a genius creator of music and art, but a constant provocateur and defying of cultural norms and the status quo of the establishments of governments, religion and more, we will never see a once-in-a-lifetime talent and personality like this again. Today marks the fifteenth anniversary of the murder of Dimebag Darrell Lance Abbott of Pantera and Damageplan while on stage at the Alrosa Villa club in Columbus, Ohio. Darrell’s shine has not dimmed in the years since he passed. Revered as ever as a songwriter, shredder, and person, new fans sprout up every day who look up to the unquestioned guitar hero of the 1990s.  Of note, with Slayer’s final show in the books, Darrell would have been proud to have his songs performed at every stop on The  Final Campaign tour.  As we do every year, we pay tribute to this fallen hero. Artillery Guitarist and Founder Morten Stützer Dies, Age 57

In more sad news today, Artillery guitarist and co-founding member Morten Stützer has died. He was 57. The band broke the news of Morten’s passing in a Facebook post earlier today. “Dear loyal friends and fans, it is with a heavy heart, a great deal of shock and a lot of disbelief that we have inform you that founding member, friend, and brother Morten Stützer, no longer is with us. He passed away at the way-too-early age of 57 on the evening of October 2nd. He was surrounded by his family”. Stützer had been in declining health for some time and unable to tour for several years. It’s hard to believe but today marks the fourteenth anniversary of the murder of Dimebag Darrell Lance Abbott of Pantera and Damageplan at the hands of a maniac while on stage in Columbus, Ohio at the Alrosa Villa club. The many years that have passed since his death has done little to quell the pain of his loss. Especially now with the passing of Dime’s brother Vinnie Paul last summer. As we do every year, we pay tribute to this fallen hero of metal music.
