ShipRocked 2016 Part 1: Days 1 And 2

shiprocked 2016

Ghost Cult kicked off 2016 “Vacationing Harder” on the Norwegian Pearl with the amazing ShipRocked Cruise. Departing out of the Port of Miami, the four-day concert experience on the ocean drew nearly 3000 cruisers on the sold-out ship with the a huge waiting list left wanting. The seventh edition of the trip was stacked with hit-making rock and metal bands like Five Finger Death Punch, Halestorm and Seether performing multiple sets on different days. Sailing to lovely Costa Maya Mexico, everyone was all smiles for miles! Forty bands jamming over four days, on four stages raged while the beer and liquor flowed with fans. The best part of the rock cruise experience is the up close and personal experience of sailing with the bands, and the first class experience of the ship, its crew and staff. Covering the first two days of the cruise, bands such as FFDP, Halestorm, and Seether headlined the main-stages, frequent ShipRocked band 10 Years (three times on ShipRocked) delighted returning trip veterans, while up a coming bands like We Are Harlot (led by Danny Worsnop, ex-Asking Alexandria), Glorious Sons, and scene stealers in Doll Skin minted new fans. It’s great to see young talent represented and not out classed, like they might be as some of the larger festivals. Rick Triana for RIPT Media Productions captured all the action tirelessly on deck, on shore, and on all the stages for Ghost Cult Magazine.

We Are Harlot – We Are Harlot

From the outside looking in, it can be easy to judge people we don’t know. Take Danny Worsnop as a prime example… the last Asking Alexandria album From Death To Destiny (Sumerian) was widely seen as a step back at best, and tepid filler at worst (though hardly a commercial failure, nonetheless), so jumping ship to a more commercially viable band, the cynic would say, prolongs his stay in the limelight and at the top, and gives him a better chance of maintaining the Sunset Strip lifestyle. The cynic will be shot down in flames by joie de vivre of We Are Harlot (Roadrunner). ‘Blame It On The Love Of Rock n’ Roll’ as someone fairly successful once sang…

While first track ‘Dancing on Nails’ is decent and rocky enough, second track ‘DLT’ (Dirty Little Thing, not a defence of disgraced UK DJ Dave Lee Travis) is one helluva fuel injection turbo boost that prompts an face-splitting grin, as the guitars rock out and Worsnop belts out the chorus, and it all makes sense; whatever you perceive his motives to be, you can’t fake energy, you can’t fake fun and you can’t fake rock n’ fucking roll, and We Are Harlot has all three in spades.

I don’t know Worsnop, but any doubts I had are banished by the genuine, honest, uptempo and spirited rock n’ roll on display throughout.

From that moment on, the album flies by in a conveyor belt of Joe Perry-on-speed chord-bashing guitar liveliness and vocal exuberance. Worsnop brought the rock to AA at times, but here he’s set free and has never sounded better, and it must be said, it’s great to live in a world without breakdowns. He may not have the distinctiveness of an Axl or a Jon Bon Jovi but there is a touch of blues, a touch of pop and a bucketful of rock, and a nice gravelly tone to Worsnop’s voice, particularly on the bourbon-ballad ’I Tried’. ‘The One’ swaggers, ‘Flying Close To The Sun’ and ‘Never Turn Back’ have radio hit written all over them while ‘One More Night’ is head-on smash (hit) of Appetite For Destruction (Geffen) and The Wildhearts.

However, don’t think for a second this is a retro-by-numbers homage to The Legends Of Rock. Yes, you can hear Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses have had their influence in the sound, but this is a flying by the seat of its pants, gregarious, germane, gratifying, gratuitous and genuinely great album.

Producer Joey Sturgis Comments on Asking Alexandria Split

joey sturgis 2

Award-winning metal producer Joey Sturgis (The Devil Wears Prada/Miss May I/Of Mice And Men/the Acacia Strain/Attack Attack/Emmure/Oceano) has weighed in on the departure of Danny Worsnop from Asking Alexandria. Sturgis applied his golden touch to AA’s numerous releases, working with them closly, and he could be considered a confidant and friend to both parties.

Sturgis commented:

“Working with Asking Alexandria has always been a magical thing, we have always seemed to connect on a very deep level musically. I’ve been producing the band since the moment they stepped foot on american soil, and I am proud of it. When we first began to bring their songs to life, none of us knew what to expect and what would become of it; but the band had an amazing passion and fire that drove them straight to the top. Asking Alexandria has always had that fire, and will continue to have that fire! This is only the end of an early chapter, and the start to a new one. AA Family will be strong, and AA will live on”.

Danny Worsnop Out As Asking Alexandria’s Front Man

Asking Alexandria Band_Photo_2014

Controversial front man Danny Worsnop and Asking Alexandria have shockingly parted ways as revealed in a series of posts on Facebook last night. The surprise is that it seems fairly amicable. Worsnop announced to his fans that he and the band were headed different ways, and Worsnop will put all of his focus on his new band We Are Harlot, which is releasing their debut album on Roadrunner this spring.

Worsnop’s statement to fans:

"To all of my friends and fans: I would like to let you know that Asking Alexandria and I are moving forward in separate ways. Over the last eight years together we've done some amazing things and created something truly special. I now, same as then, want what's best for the band and at this point in time, that isn't me. Asking Alexandria will continue to tour throughout the year and will be working on a new album. I will always support and love Asking Alexandria and cannot wait to see what the future holds for them. I am excited for the next chapter of my life with We Are Harlot and will see you all on the road!"

Sometime later, Ben Bruce responded to Worsnop’s post, announcing plans for AA to play this summer’s Warped Tour with an as yet unnamed new singer:

Together Worsnop and AA shot to fame as a new breed of bands on Sumerian records, and over the course of three albums shot to commercial success, while dividing their own fans at times. Worsnop’s We Are Harlot, released a video for their latest single, ‘Dancing On Nails,’ earlier this week:
