Danimal Cannon – Lunaria

Danimal Cannon- Lunaria ghotcultmag

If there is one thing that metallers seem to love, its nostalgia; endlessly lusting over the past and claiming that things in the modern day just aren’t as good as they used to be, or wanting to revert back to a bygone era and way. Therefore it stands to reason that Lunaria (Ubiktune) and its reminiscence of retro video games should appeal to many.

Part of the niche and particularly cult scene Chiptune, one man tech metaller Danimal Cannon will prove a unique and oddball entity for many, with a brand of progressive metal which invokes the 8 bit sound of classic gaming, as well as shades of industrial metal of the likes of Nine Inch Nails. Familiar tech metal nuances and breakdowns are immersed with nostalgia ridden beeps, effects and tones that hark back to the early video gaming memories of peoples childhoods, immersing you in to a trip down memory lane. Far from being a novelty gimmick however, Lunaria offers a rich palette of layers and substance, proving accessible yet complex.

As hugely entertaining this is however, it does come with minor flaws; predominantly its taxing duration. At around 55 minutes this does take a long time to invest into and may lose people at first as a result. Once it has been penetrated however you’ll find one of the most characterful acts in modern progressive metal, with an album that is immersive and atmospheric as much as it is warming. An impressive surprise which will make you want to dig out all those old consoles for yet another dusting off.
