To fans of a certain age, this is the album they have been waiting all year long for. If you were in Smashing Pumpkins’ camp over say Nirvana, or Pearl Jam, congrats you were a “grunge kid”. Not to describe the music in such banal terms, but pop culture is gonna pop, you know? In the mold of alt-rock giants like Sonic Youth, Billy Corgan’s brainchild never wanted to set limitations on the music, only that it reflects the entire kaleidoscope of sounds and emotions. Sure, band reunions are a dime a dozen today, but there is an undoubted mythos of Billy making a new album with both James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlain. With Corgan on bass over exiled D’arcy Wretsky (boo) and Jeff Schroeder contributing on guitar, it was unclear what kind of results to expect. Yet, this new era, the old-school band definitely had some tricks up their sleeves for Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1: No Past. No Future. No Sun. (Martha’s Music/Napalm Records). Continue reading

Smashing Pumpkins Rejoined By Jimmy Chamberlin For Marilyn Manson Tour
The Smashing Pumpkins will be joined for their next tour by founding member Jimmy Chamberlin on drums. Led by sole original member Billy Corgan are about to embark on a co-headlining US tour with Marilyn Manson, Corgan approached Chamberlin about the gig while wrapping up an acoustic tour before the next leg.
Corgan told USA today in an interview how he approached Chamberlin to return:
“We suddenly found ourselves in the situation of not having anybody lined up. On the group’s first acoustic tour, which will wrap Thursday in Minneapolis, the band’s configuration does not include a drummer. “We knew we could do the acoustic tour with some backing tapes and drum machines, stuff like that, but we’re also looking at the Manson tour in three weeks.”
Chamberlin also commented on the reunion:
“He asked if there was any way I’d consider coming back for the tour. It’s a great opportunity not only to celebrate the music, but to celebrate the friendship and the legacy.”
Chamblerin has stated this arrangement is just for the tour and not a permanent reunion. Since leaving the Pumpkins for the third time in 2009, he has focused on bands such as LiveOne and other projects.
My Favorite Concert Memory: Stavros of The Atlas Moth
“Wow there’s a lot I kind of bring up on tour. I have about 800 of these stories I always bring up on tour!
I was talking about seeing Pantera the other day with White Zombie and Deftones. It was 1997. It was The 101 Proof (East West) tour for Pantera and Astro Creep 2000 for White Zombie. It was kind of Pantera, in my personal opinion, it was their prime! I always thought White Zombie sucked actually, but I loved them when I was young and dumb. They were always a really terrible as a live band, and Rob Zombie is like the Vince Neil of metal, he cannot sing. But Pantera for me were at the pinnacle and Deftones are still one of my favorite bands. And I remember in Chicago, Mancow came out and introduced Pantera with Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) and Kato Kalen, from the OJ shit (Editor’s note: The OJ Simpson Trial). (laughs) I remember thinking “What the fuck is this? This guy is a celebrity? What is he doing here?” And White Zombie had a big stage show with too many lights that sucked, but they had those really awesome skeletons that hung down from the top of the stage. I still have the hoodie from that tour, my Deftones hoodie, which is my favorite.”
The Atlas Moth just wrapped up a headline tour of the US. They are still supporting The Old Believer (Profound Lore) album, which released in June 2014. Although they canceled their planned European tour for this summer, they have another pending US tour for this fall, and an as yet unnamed new split EP with another band TBD.
