Hempispheres does not attempt to continue where 2018’s The Sciences left off. With significant new blood in the lineup, the album finds its own footing, distinctly in the spirit of Sleep‘s decades-long legacy but sharper and more agile.

The album marks Sleep‘s first without guitarist Matt Pike. Alongside bassist and principal songwriter Al Cisneros, the new incarnation features Dale Crover of Melvins and Redd Kross on drums and Bubba Dupree of Void on guitar. Crover came in naturally – he had seen Sleep live in San Francisco in the early Nineties, and Sleep had themselves been transformed by witnessing the Melvins‘ legendary 1988 Gluey Porch Treatments-era shows. Cisneros calls Crover’s drumming “otherworldly, life-changing.”

For guitar, Dupree came highly recommended, and the first jam session nailed it immediately, a vibe Cisneros describes as “blue sunglasses era Iommi.” Though stepping into Pike’s shoes weighs on him, “Matt’s an icon,” Dupree is resolved that imitating Pike’s style would be hollow. Instead, he leans into his own voice, determined that “Sleep’s soul is still totally intact.” The album was recorded at the Melvins‘ studio with longtime engineer Toshi Kasai.

In conjunction with the album, Al Cisneros presents Issue One of the Sleep Comic Book, his authorial debut for Third Man Books, illustrated by Dave Kloc and Arik Roper. The comic begins the saga of The Marijuanaut and is available in a standard edition and a signed limited-edition bundle that includes the comic, a full-cover poster, a signed bookplate, designed rolling papers, and a flexi disc of “Have Spacesuit Will Travel.” The physical edition of Hempispheres follows on October 30.
