Octavius. A stylistic shift for Jersey-based trio Return To Earth — a dark and retrowave-inspired 4-song release created mostly using synthesizers and ambient electronic sounds.

RTE has been an underground band since 2006, with a stint on Metal Blade Records and a lineup that has remained intact since the start, anchored by one of math rock’s most heralded drummers, Chris Pennie (a founding member of The Dillinger Escape Plan).

On Octavius, the trio of Pennie, guitarist Brett Aveni and singer Ron Scalzo create edgy cinematic synth rock in the style of their heroes, Hans Zimmer and Ludwig Goransson, Peter Gabriel and Trent Reznor.

While each of RTE’s prior three albums have featured some orchestral and ethereal moments, Octavius eschews acoustic instruments almost entirely in favor of zeroes and ones and the electro-rock sensibilities of acts like Depeche Mode, Gunship, Level 42 and Daft Punk.
