One thing about Zakk Wylde he never does what is expected of most guitar heroes. In his nearly 30 year career, he has always thrown curveballs at listeners, paved his own road, and still delivered for fans.
Sure, he can shred with the best of them, but Zakk the songwriter is often underrated. Not just as a hit maker with Ozzy Osborne, but the ability to write great rock and metal songs. Zakk also has an affinity for chilled out acoustic guitars, and folksy jams that take advantage of not just his ability to wail, but to show off his soulful, southern rock side too. Earlier this year Zakk returned to that style with the excellent Book of Shadows II (eOne), a stripped down affair with no pinch squeals and few leads, just great songs. Zakk has been touring heavily with this project, his first forray as a solo artist with a band, not just Black Label Society. Accompanied on tour by Tyler Bryant And The Shakedown, and Jared James Nichols, the mood was set perfectly. In this guise Zakk played a lot of new songs, some jams from Book Of Shadows I, other BLS songs, and a few covers. No need for showing off, just great performances, although there were surely some guitar fanatics in the room tonight. Tonight the show was captured by Rick Triana of Rick Triana Photography for Ghost Cult, so check out the photo set below.
