As music fans, we are getting spoiled these days with supergroups and guest collaborations. One rumor of a collaboration from the last decade that didn’t happen was Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater, Sons of Apollo, The Winery Dogs, Neal Morse Band, Flying Colors) Devin Townsend and Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt . In a series of tweets between Portnoy and Townsend the last few days, Portnoy expressed interest that we would still ike to work with them in some capacity someday. Townsend answered back about his admiration for Portnoy, and offered some insights as to why this never happened. Åkerfeldt is not on Twitter and hasn’t commented. This is obviously just speculation and playful musing by Mike. We are not trying to fan the flames of it, except to say we’d love to hear some music from this group, if it ever happens. Remember that music is a gift and these artists don’t owe the fans much of anything. Thanks for sharing Mike, don’t kill us!
I hate to start rumors but just for the record, back in early 2010 myself, @dvntownsend and Mikael Akerfeldt were in talks of trying to start a project…(being it was almost 10yrs ago, I assume it’s now safe to say!) Still would love to do it someday… 🤘 https://t.co/aljoxdzeac

Woke up to all these comments about my post…! 😳 Jeez, sorry @dvntownsend for opening up this subject haha! Figured after 10 yrs it was OK to disclose our talks about possibly doing something back then…Let’s get back on track to what started this thread: #EMPATH is out 3/29!! https://t.co/WQu0UEuj1X

Ah man, I suck at collaborating. I take forever to do things and follow intuition in a weird way. I get petulant and shitty when I work with people then feel like a jackass for appearing like I don’t care, when I actually care too much. I love you and Mike. Sorry I balked. :/

We all get asked to do things like this all the time. I guess I feel they’re easily rushed and often have more to do with the ‘cred‘ of the members than the actual music. I’m a long term writer, and I hate being rushed. There’s always time still. Who knows what the future holds.
