Long Distance Calling – The Flood Inside

Long-Distance-Calling-The-Flood-InsideTwo years on since these German prog/instrumentalists released their 3rd and self titled effort there has been some significant change in the ranks. The departure of founding member Reimut vonn Bonn saw a shift in musical direction, and the joining to the fold of permanent vocalist Martin Fischer (previously, the sparse use of vocals were done by guest vocalists, most notably John Bush of Anthrax and Armored Saint fame).

The presence of a permanent vocalist does in part push this to a new direction, but The Flood Inside [Superball Music] doesn’t shift entirely from what fans will know from before. Opening track ‘Nucleus’ for example is a very melodic and sprawling instrumental number which veers and changes from being very delicate, building up before returning to a fragile and melodious finish. ‘Ductus’ similarly has quite a haunting yet peaceful ambience to it, and although does have the odd change in passage it doesn’t swerve significantly or unnaturally. Elsewhere, such as on ‘The Man Within’ and ‘Tell The End’, is the presence of a darker feel and sound more based upon heavier riffs and grooves.

The flip side sees the band experimenting with some more straight forward songs, normally with the presence of Fischer on full display. Most notably of these is ‘Inside The Flood’ which once again sees heavier grooves prominent; and sees the song structure a little less sporadic. Here as well we see Fischer’s dynamism and range in full flow, proving himself to be a very versatile vocalist.

Not so much an instrumental prog unit any more, Long Distance Calling’s fourth full length sees them directing towards more use of vocal fronted prog rock, balanced with their characteristic entirely instrumental numbers. Whether or not The Flood Inside is a transitional album which sees them take the vocal led influence to greater prominence, or whether they continue to stick with this balance is yet to be seen, but on this evidence, the balance is more than suitable.
