EP REVIEW: Sobriquet – Apothesis

Emerging Sheffield-based band, Sobriquet have stopped destroying the local scenes in order to create their third EP Apotheosis (Self-Released). Their previous EPs have shown their sound to be full of hardcore and choral vocals, in a similar vein to the likes of big hitters Rolo Tomassi. Are the band able to keep the momentum up with Apotheosis

Right, from the get-go, there is no doubt that the energy has faded. Guitars fill your left ear swiftly switching over to the right on the opening track, ‘Death Of An Author’, making full use of the stereophonic sound. After this, chaos kicks in as vocalist Ludo Fahey screams their guts out to what will be a raucous display of moshing live. You can tell the intentions of the whole EP at the end of the first verse. These songs were designed to create carnage on the live circuit.

This vibe is carried on in the following tracks until the interlude ‘The Dark, The Light, The Void’ which creates a moody atmosphere reminiscent of metalcore band Loathe’s latest endeavours in ‘I Let It In anf It Took Everything’. The track works perfectly as palette cleanser and as a source of respite from the havoc shown in the previous three tracks.

Closing with ‘The Tower’, the song is tilted more heavily towards the clean vocals with sudden moments of frenzied screams before switching back to the moody melodies represented in the interlude track. As the sound fades away, cult-like choral vocals chime in with “We’ll be there to witness me”.

For an emerging band on their third EP, Apotheosis is the glowing sign of full potential, with similarities clear on the release from the likes of Glassjaw and The Dillinger Escape Plan, there are no limits for what this band could aspire to accomplish.
