Weaponised Youth is the new self-released EP from Brighton-based two-piece Snayx, a band who are fully engaging the cheepy- chappie Electro-Pop-Rock sound that fits right in with the weekend vibe of their seaside hometown. The idea for Snayx was initially bubbling away in conversation between friends Charlie Herridge and Ollie Corner, when the opportunity arose for them to support local south-coast punks Kid Kapichi and the two decided they’d better get some songs together.
They released their debut single ‘False Friends’ in 2021 and have kept the momentum running with some headlines shows and further support slots with the likes of Nova Twins.
The EP opens with the incredibly catchy ‘Work’ with a chorus that, despite musically being somewhat of a rip off of The Prodigy and L7 cyber-punk smasher ‘Fuel My Fire’, will have you singing along as Herridge snarls “I Stand Up, I Sit Down, I Get Told To Shut Up!” The song opens with a fuzzing bassline and a feel of The Clash about the verse and is a wonderful ode to the working class.
In comparison ‘Body Language’ is far more laid back and groovy, built around the funk of an RHCP’s style bassline and a nineties American Indie vibe. This continues onto ‘Deranged’ with a chorus that’ll appeal to fans of Weezer and the like, but also has a distinct electro-pop sound to the bass, reminiscent of Does It Offend You, Yeah?
This strong prominent bass sound is consistent across the release and notable again on ‘Weaponised’ with its Hard Fi-esq verse and a strong melodic chorus. While closer ‘Buck’ is all about that big muff bass sound once again, and with a clattering drum which sounds not unlike Royal Blood, another Brighton-based two-piece and a band whose success Snayx would no doubt love to emulate.
And on this showing its fair to say they would certainly appear to have the songwriting chops to start getting themselves seriously noticed.
