EP REVIEW: Overthrow – Ascension of the Entombed

Evolution is inevitable. It happens in humanity, nature and even art. Since their start back in 2011, British extreme metallers, Overthrow have grown and evolved their style with each release. Starting out playing dirty thrash and adding in plenty of grimey black metal, Overthrow has upped their attack with more of a tried and true death metal attack.

Don’t worry, their evolution in style is in no means a step towards civility. Ascension of the Entombed (Redefining Darkness) is a nasty little EP of bloodthirsty riffs, savage shrieks and plenty of despair. While this may be a short affair, Overthrow attack with such ferocity across four tracks, it’s a wonder if a human could survive the onslaught of a four album.

Overthrow perfectly blends in black, thrash and death metal with great pacing and some incredible drumming blending it all together. The song attacks are savage but there is plenty of groove to be felt below the surface. The title track, “Ascension of the Entombed”, is a perfect example of the band’s musical evolution. It starts off nasty with sickened vocals and squealing guitars before going into more of a groovy tempo before picking up speed and even more savageness along the way.

The rest of the EP is stuffed full with more lovely homicidal and relentless tunes. Overthrow fly the blackened thrash flag high, hardly giving you time to pick your guts off the floor. Closing track “Caustic Vengeance” momentary pauses to slow down for a moment, only to up the attack with thunderous pounding drums and despair soaked riffs. The vocals on this track are sick and brutal and perfectly capture the rest of the band’s power.

All in all this is a very satisfying spin that will please metal fans across multiple genres
