On paper, a band from Italy dubbed as “Dwarf Metal” may have you scratching your head. Yet when you listen to Wind Rose, it just works and it just makes sense. The quintet from the Tuscany region takes the festive feel of Folk Metal and the playfulness from Power Metal to create this fantastical new genre. Their unique merry-making is greatly contagious and explains why they are rapidly growing in popularity. They are now getting ready to release their sixth full-length record, Trollslayer (Napalm Records) that advances the band’s well-known jovial sound. They have managed to take all their best features, importantly multiple songs about beer, and compiled it all into this new album.
The record starts off with an instrumental intro that sets the mood. The listener will begin to feel like they want to go on an adventure when the keys, brass, and chanting swells. The short, pump-up piece leads directly into “Dance of the Axes” which really gets the party started. Speedy guitars sing and a bouncy bombasticness is unleashed. All the numbers like “Home of the Twilight” and “Legacy of the Forge” carry these happy, go-lucky moments that instantly have the listener headbanging along with one fist flying in the air while the other one should be holding an axe or tankard. The upbeat rigor and boisterous gruff from frontman Francesco Cavalieri joyfully tells tales of a day in the life of a dwarf. Every song has catchy, sing-along choruses where the listener will begin to feel like one of these short-statured creatures themselves.
The anthem-like numbers “The Great Feast Underground,” “To Be a Dwarf,” and “No More Sorrow” makes one crave a strong drink in the best of ways. “Rock and Stone” and “Trollslayer” have crunchy riffs, cherry choruses, with a delightfully heavy bottom end giving them a rough and tough medieval feel. This album carries on the well-rounded fun this band is known for and is guaranteed to lift the spirits. Wind Rose is a bright spot in the scene and continues to make truly mirthful and amusing music.
