ALBUM REVIEW: Suicide Silence – Remember… You Must Die

I have one question for the Suicide Silence lads. Why is it that they are perfectly content to settle on terrible studio production and mix? Yes, I get that The Cleansing and No Time to Bleed were popular and well-regarded in the Deathcore circle, but in all honesty, they were never going to be considered amongst the best metal recordings ever.

Things only got worse when they decided to collaborate with Nu-Metal’s weird uncle Ross Robinson on their unfortunate self-titled album in 2017. Now, in what appears to be an effort to distance themselves from that musical experiment they’ve decided to double down on the deathcore of old on Remember… You Must Die (Century Media), yet everything is as muddy and if not even more distorted and overblown than before.

Every double kick drum and blast beat on tracks like ‘Kill Again’ and ‘You Must Die’ leaves an unpleasant rattling in your ear that makes you wonder if your headphones suddenly decided to die a violent death. And you’re probably wondering who inflicted such an unpleasant studio sound on the band? Is musical terrorist Bob Rock still out committing sonic crimes against humanity like he did with Metallica’s St. Anger? No, surprisingly this time around it was Taylor Young behind the board who you may remember from uncompromisingly heavy but always sterling work with outfits like Nails and Twitching Tongues.

Not quite ready to lay any of the blame on Young though as on songs like ‘Fucked for Life’ or ‘The Third Death’ (appropriately one of four numbers directly referencing death in the title) Suicide Silence is perfectly content to channel the simplistic Deathcore of yesteryear. Plenty of bass booms, triggered drums, and profanity to ensure that this is every freshman’s favorite Death Metal album until somebody finally shows them a Despised Icon release.
