ALBUM REVIEW: Siege of Power – This Is Tomorrow

Normally when I hear the term “Supergroup,” I let out a disappointed sigh. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great idea to have a bunch of your favorite musicians get together and collaborate on something new. The major problem with this however is that it often works better as an idea since the finished product never seems to live up to the hype. Other times, the supergroup offers nothing really new. Siege of Power is to defy that cliche.

Siege of Power is a supergroup consisting of Chris Reifert (Autopsy – vocals), Paul Baayans (Asphyx – guitars), Theo Van Eekelen (Hail of Bullets – bass), and Bob Bagchus (Asphyx – drums). With their sophomore release, This is Tomorrow (Metal Blade) the band promises to take their music in a darker direction from their debut, Warning Blast.

One of the first things that sticks out is the punk and hardcore influence that can be felt on several of the songs. This crossover sound helps Siege of Power break out from familiar territory and explore new sounds. Pairing this with Reifert’s varied vocal styles that go from hardcore to total brutality makes for a really interesting and varied album.

‘Scavenger’ is a killer track that does a great job showcasing what kind of magic can happen with an OSDM supergroup. It’s a mid-tempo banger with groovy riffs, lead by pounding drums and lyrics that you will soon find yourself growling along to.

‘Zero Containment’ quickly picks up that pace into a frenzy and Reifiert’s vocals do a great job here as they become just as pummeling as the riffs. My little blackened thrasher heart absolutely adores that track, ‘The Devil’s Grasp’. It’s fast and filthy and owes a lot to Venom and Motorhead in its style.

This is Tomorrow is out to change your perception of the “supergroup”. Siege of Power manages to pack in several varying styles of music together without feeling forced. The group seems to be having a blast playing together melding their signature styles while taking a chance and incorporating plenty of experimentation. Luckily for us it works!
