ALBUM REVIEW: Jared James Nichols – Jared James Nichols

Critics who claim Rock And Roll is dead have not listened to Wisconsin native Jared James Nichols’ self-titled third album (Black Hill Records) which is filled with twelve pieces of evidence to the contrary. Nichols is known for his signature pick-less style and is one of only four global ambassadors for Gibson Guitars, which certainly sets expectations high for what you are about to experience.

Right out of the gate, ‘My Delusion’ comes at you with its fast-paced guitars, an approach that continues into ‘Easy Come, Easy Go’ with its addictive beat and high energy solo. ‘Down The Drain’ starts out on the more melodic side, but also builds as it envelops you.

Previously released ‘Hard Wired’ is more gritty and heavy on the bass tones, as is ‘Bad Roots’ which explores the desire to rise above and do better. ‘Skin ‘N Bone’ explores the shared human experience and that we are all the same on the inside and expertly executed guitar riffs keep the listener hooked to ensure the message has been conveyed. ‘Shadow Dancer’ is slower paced and laments a fall from grace.  The guitar weaves itself through the lyrics so intricately in this song and I find that this is the song I keep hearing in my thoughts.

‘Hallelujah’ is almost reminiscent of old school Black Sabbath with a modern update with its ominous tones which give way to an energetic chorus. ‘Out of Time’ is a soulful tribute to the loss of Nichols’ father.

Overall, the album is rich with its themes of pain, loss and self doubt. Nichols’ nimble fingered command of his Gibson, the straightforward drumming style and heavy hitting bass all blend cohesively to form a unique sound that is raw post-grunge blues with some punk rock influence.  Nichols’ vocal style is at times Chris Cornell which works to enhance the grunge feel. His guitar solos are even more impressive considering that he needed extensive surgery to repair a badly broken arm and he wasn’t sure if he would ever play again as a result.

Is Rock And Roll dead? Not if Jared James Nichols has anything to say about it.
