The marriage between science fiction and Black Metal may not be as prevalent or common as, say, satanic undertones and desecration of religious beliefs and practices.
However, as Imperialist prove quite aptly on their EP, Quantum (Transcending Obscurity Records), with adept musicianship and a clear cohesion, the two can work as interchangeably as salt and pepper.
The retro-style artwork that harkens back to earlier days of the genre is effectively contrasted by the abominable harsh vocals which have the velocity and tenacity to cut through steel without missing a beat.
The five tracks (one interlude) conjure our darkest anxieties into real-life entities which aim to punish us beyond our wildest nightmares. The obvious musical acumen of the four-piece comes through in every fashion, most notably on “Quantum Annexation.” Compositionally, it’s a well-oiled mech. It’s pristinely performed and acts as the flagship of Quantum.
The tempo never ceases; the stringwork refuses to relent. The belligerence and assertiveness makes it clear to all that this isn’t about to be another Star Wars prequel, sequel, or whatever direction the franchise decides to go in. Quantum is diabolical in a sense not entirely derivative of typical Black Metal.
It’s less about stargazing and fantasizing about the final frontier and more about debating what it actually would sound like to be ripped apart by the forces that reign supreme within the depths of the great unknown.
As mentioned earlier, Gateway is an interlude that splits the EP in half. Originally it seemed a curious decision to make given the compact nature of the release overall. But upon further review, it’s probably necessary to give the listener a reprieve.
Besides, “Quiescent Terror” isn’t a prance through the park. A driving, exhilarating number keeps the message loud and clear.
And thankfully, Imperialist eschew the crutch of electronics and artificial noises that other bands might latch on to for support. These guys need only their instruments and their imagination. The rest comes naturally.
