ALBUM REVIEW: Edward Reekers – The Liberty Project

Welcome, my friends to the album you know. These are Broadway musical-level compositions. Everything about Edward ReekersThe Liberty Project (Music Theories Recordings / Mascot Label Group), a prog-opera bedecked with an ensemble cast is big, bombastic, colourful, and expansive.

The Liberty Project tackles complex themes like living in the 21st century and all of the trials and tribulations that come with it. The combination of music and lyrics gives a nuanced exploration of the topics. The listener can relate as the music is approachable and enjoyable. The melodies and lyrics linger in the minds of the listener, keeping the magic of The Liberty Project alive long after the album ends. If you haven’t got a clue as to what’s going on, turn to The Liberty Project “and set the world on fire!”

Every song on The Liberty Project does follow the verse-chorus-verse structure. Did I mention the songs are catchy with memorable hooks? There is an intensity with the lyrics as they hit home on many fronts. Like the song ‘The Clash of Belief’ – as it begins with a chorus of voices that are stern and omniscient. The song speaks to being trusting in someone’s word as they are an authoritarian figure and should be turned to. It speaks to being powerless and ruled by someone because life can be merciless and the only salvation is to “pray to be whole”. But the piano and musical ambiance gives a sense of unease and foreboding.

‘Never Again’ is lovely as it has a circus carousel calliope vibe to it. It would be very much at home in Sweeney Todd. While ‘As Good As Any Goal’ is perfect in both Into the Woods or Les Misérables

Edward Reekers’ lyrics can be gritty and powerful and full of emotion, and their vessels are melodic and catchy. Brought to life by Steve Hackett (Genesis), Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon), Damian Wilson (Threshold), John ‘Jaycee’ Cuijpers (Praying Mantis), Koen Herfst (Vandenberg), Cindy Oudshoorn (Kayak – Reekers’ former band), and more, the music ranges from aggressive to energetic to introspective.

There is a sense of urgency to The Liberty Project. The Liberty Project embodies excitement, empowerment, angst, and defiance and everything in between. The harmonies in the singing and choruses are top-notch. The vocalizing would make Claude-Michel Schönberg proud. It is an album not for the faint of heart. Edward Reekers and The Liberty Project really makes you think about the state of the world and our place in it.
