So, you like Death Metal, do you? Are you sure or do you like the idea of appearing to be a death metal aficionado? It’s an honest question. Okay, if you’re about this life then you might just appreciate Artificial Brain (Profound Lore) the latest album from a lovely New York crew operating under the same moniker.
And for those who just realized that the blast beat life is not for them? I don’t know, call your lawyer as you may feel entitled to financial compensation after the negligent sonic beating that is Artificial Brain.
Not sure what exactly causes a band to go this hard on a particular album. Was Dan Gargiulo not satisfied with the musical chaos that have been Revocation’s last few releases? Because he seems hellbent on pushing the genre into the red in a way that hasn’t been felt since Gorguts’ revolutionary Colored Sands. Dear reader, I’ve been listening to this genre since my adolescent years and even I was taken aback at quite a few moments during Artificial Brain.
And for full context I am currently in my mid-thirties and going through a “nothing truly surprises me anymore” phase.
Please someone try to make sense of ‘Tome of the Exiled Engineer.’ Things get going with an opening riff best described as Satan’s alarm tone with Keith Abrami’s drums sounding like they’ve tumbled down a flight of stairs while the rest of the band runs through the wall like the fucking Kool-Aid Man. And once you’re done with that take a gander at the guitar solo deep into ‘A Lofty Grave.’ It’s as if aliens learned to play guitar by strictly listening to Slayer leads. For more guitar alien warfare, you’re definitely going to pay attention to the title track and it’s immediate follow up ‘Glitch Cannon.’ Have fun deciphering those hieroglyphics, I mean, guitar tabs. Actually, Artificial Brain would pick up some extra coin if they chose to release their guitar tabs.
So, if you really like death metal, Artificial Brain has such sights to show you.
