Universal Music Suspends Activities with Rammstein as German Police Investigate Sexual Assault Claims

According to published reports (The New York Times, Lambgoat.com) German police have initiated an investigation into Till Lindemann, frontman of Rammstein, over numerous accusations of sexual assault. As a result, Universal Music, their label and the largest record label in the world, has suspended all of their activities for the band. Rammstein is currently in the midst of a full-European stadium tour.

A spokesperson from the Berlin public prosecutor’s office said:

“Preliminary proceedings have been initiated against Till Lindemann on allegations relating to sexual offenses and the distribution of narcotics … on the basis of several criminal complaints filed by third parties.”

Recently Lindemann lost his book deal, the book’s publisher citing its use in a pornographic film. Rumors surrounding the artist’s misconduct had been spreading on social media platforms and German news outlets for close to two weeks before the local authorities took legal action.

Lindemann’s alleged criminal activities reportedly include drugging women and sexually assaulting them. Sources also claim that the musician organized a system to lure female fans into participating in sexual activities before, during, and after the band’s performances. Lindemann’s lawyers have so far declined to comment on these accusations, but they issued a statement last week denying that their client had drugged women, and they warned they would pursue legal action against anyone publishing such claims.

The label commented:

“The accusations against Till Lindemann have shocked us and we have the greatest respect for the women who have spoken out so courageously in public in this case.

We have suspended marketing and promotional activities for the band’s recordings until further notice.”
