The Kovenant formed in 1993 in Hamar, Norway, by Stian “Nagash” Arnesen and Amund “Blackheart” Svensson as a side project from Troll. Originally operating as Covenant and playing symphonic black metal, the band changed their name to The Kovenant in 1999 following a legal dispute with a Swedish electronic body music act that held the rights to the original name. The name change coincided with a deliberate stylistic shift toward cyber-industrial metal.

Their debut, In Times Before The Light, arrived in 1997. The breakthrough came a year later with Nexus Polaris, which expanded the lineup to include Hellhammer (Mayhem, Arcturus), Astennu (ex-Dimmu Borgir), Sverd (Arcturus), and Sarah Jezebel Deva (ex-Cradle of Filth). Nexus Polaris earned immediate recognition as a landmark of symphonic black metal and won the Norwegian Grammy for best metal album. The follow-up, Animatronic, released in 1999, pushed further into industrial territory and won a second Norwegian Grammy for best metal album. A fourth studio album, SETI, followed in 2003. The band reunited briefly for Norway’s Inferno Metal Festival in 2010 before going quiet until 2024.

The 2024 reunion brought the band back to perform material from Nexus Polaris, In Times Before The Light, and Animatronic. Since then, the band has confirmed the permanent departure of guitarist Astennu due to escalating personal struggles and a breach of tour conduct agreements. The remaining core lineup of Nagash, Hellhammer, Sverd, and Sarah Jezebel Deva continues, with Ghul of Mayhem handling guitar duties for the 2026 cycle. The Kovenant
