Mastodon played at Tool’s Tool in the Sand Festival this weekend, just days after the departure of longtime songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds after 25-years with the group. They recruited YouTuber and metal guitar expert Ben Eller, at least for these shows. No word yet if Eller will continue to play and sing with the band, tour for their upcoming commitments, and join the band on a more permanent basis. Eller was said to have learned 18 songs in a short span of time for the gig. namely 1980s hair metal tribute Skankbanger, the southern blues-rock Kennedy Wood Band as well as laying down bass and guitar with Andy Wood’s instrumental project.
