Shiloh and Bill Elkins founded Alley Music Studios in 1973. Since opening its doors the famed rehearsal studio has been a magnet in Los Angeles’ NOHO Arts District for a who’s who of music legends. Now that Alley Music Studios is going to be the subject of a documentary film in 2016, we thought it was a good time to check in with co-owner Shiloh Elkins. In an interview with Melina Dellamarggio for Ghost Cult, Shiloh filled us in on the back story of this underrated L.A. music mecca, a namecheck of all the artists who led to its rise to prominence, the basis for the film and her dreams for the future of the business and much more. Legendary Los Angeles music studio and rehearsal space Alley Music Studios will be the focus of a documentary film, planned for release in 2016. Executive producer Todd Bellina and his team have been collecting footage, interviews with artists, and archival photos from the owners Bill and Shiloh Elkins, who have built and run the venerable studio used by a who’s who of headline acts for forty years, since opening its doors in 1973. The location continues to be a favorite of modern artists as well, as an alternative to the typical Hollywood studio experience.

The producers of the film have shared their synopsis of the film:

In the NoHo district of North Hollywood, California, quietly hidden behind a small burger joint, is a very unique and very special musical venue known as “The All3y”, a music rehearsal studio that has attracted some of the finest musical talent of the last four decades. From David Crosby to The Red Hot Chili Peppers to Jackson Brown and many more.

Chad Smith’s Bombastic Meatbats: Live At The Baked Potato

Chad Smith’s Bombastic Meatbats (Chad Smith on drums, Jeff Kollman on guitars, Ed Roth on keyboards, and Kevin Chown on bass) teamed up for a night of funk/rock/fusion on at The Baked Potato, making for an unforgettable evening. Each musician complementing each other, the band played two sets, one at 9:30p.m and one at 11:30p.m, jamming on into the wee hours of the morning.

The band formed somewhat accidentally in Los Angeles in 2008 when Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer, Smith, got together with Kollman (Cosmosquad), and Roth while having impromptu jam sessions when warming up for Glenn Hughes. They later added Chown on bass, to form the band.

During their show at The Baked Potato, everyone was all smiles, as usual. Jeff had celebrated his birthday the day before, so shots were passed around and a birthday song was sung in celebration. At one point, Chad asked for audience participation with an upcoming song. Pointing to a young kid seated at one of the tables, he asked (presumably) his father, “Who brings their kid to a dirty, smelly bar to see a show?” He then asked where they were from, and when the man responded, “Canada”, Chad said, “Ahh, that explains it!.” The whole crowd burst into laughter.

The light-hearted mood continued on through the night as Jeff’s guitar playing rang out through The Baked Potato, Ed’s vintage keyboard and Kevin’s thumping bass complimented Chad’s unbeatable drumming skills. By the end of the show, the crowd was left in awe of these talented musicians, and couldn’t have asked for a more fulfilling evening.

Their latest Grammy nominated album Outlaw Gentleman and Shady Ladies (Universal) has been certified Platinum in three countries and Gold in several others. The band is hitting the road this spring for a string of dates with Anthrax and Crobot. Press Notes:

Q Prime, the New York based music management firm founded and run by Cliff Burnstein and Peter Mensch, today announced the North American management signing of the Grammy nominated Danish metal band Volbeat.

“Anytime you see a band (in Lubbock, Texas no less) who can play Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” and their own “Hangman’s Body Count” in the same set is worth managing,” said Peter Mensch. “We are looking forward to plunging into wildly imaginative world of Volbeat.”

“We are truly excited to join forces with Qprime as our management team for the Americas. We’re honored to be amongst such great bands as Muse and Metallica and to be able to work with such a great organization,” said Volbeat’s Michael Poulsen. “We can’t wait to be back on North American soil to see our American and Canadian fans in April.”

Since forming in Copenhagen in 2000, Volbeat has released five studio albums and two live offerings. Volbeat is Michael Poulsen (vocals/guitar), Anders Kjølholm (bass) and Jon Larsen (drums). In 2013, former Anthrax/The Damned Things guitarist Rob Caggiano, who produced their current album, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, with longtime Volbeat co-producer Jacob Hansen, joined the band as a full time member.

Volbeat’s current release Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies has sold more than 300,000 copies in the U.S., alongside hundreds of thousands of digital singles. The title has been certified platinum in their home country of Denmark, alongside Germany and Austria, with gold sales in Finland and Sweden. The album has also been certified gold in Canada. This past year, the Danish quartet received their first GRAMMY nomination in the “Best Metal Performance” category for “Room 24” (Volbeat Featuring King Diamond), and won Germany’s Echo Award for “Best International Alternative Act.” Recently, “A Warrior’s Call” from Beyond Heaven / Above Hell was certified gold in the U.S. for sales of 500,000 units by the RIAA.
