Lollapalooza the former traveling festival and the iconic alternative Rock event of the summer will return to Grant Park at full capacity July 29-August 1, 2021. The lineup will be revealed tomorrow, Wednesday, May 19, at 10 a.m. CT, with tickets going on sale at 12 p.m. CT at www.lollapalooza.com.
Jane’s Addiction reunited to perform two songs during Lollapalooza’s Lolla2020 livestream, a free four-night broadcast event taking place on the original dates of the Chicago-based festival. Singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Chris Chaney reunited for their first public appearance in three years to perform “I Would For You” and “Stop!” The band formed in Los Angeles 35 years ago and helped put Alternative rock on the map with their string of hit albums and Farrell founding Lollapalooza in 1991. Jane’s Addiction released its last album, The Great Escape Artist, back in 2011.
Guns N Roses will continue their wildly successful “Not In The Lifetime Tour” that has been going since 2016, with shows at three Lollapalooza Festivals in 2020: in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. No word if they will join the US version next summer in Chicago. Joining GNR will be Travis Scott, The Strokes, Lana Del Rey, Martin Garrix and Gwen Stefani. The Lineup Also Includes Armin Van Buuren, Vampire Weekend, Cage The Elephant, James Blake, Brockhampton, Alan Walker, Illenium, The Lumineers, Kacey Musgraves, Rex Orange County, Rita Ora, A Day To Remember, Charlie Xcx, Perry Farrell’s Kind Heaven Orchestra, King Princess, LP, Jaden Smith, Madeon and more. Perry Farrell scarcely needs an introduction to readers of this website. Somewhat surprisingly for an artist that seems to be working on at least something every day of the week, a very long time has passed since his 2001 opus Song Yet to Be Sung. Farrell’s legacy will undoubtedly be dominated by his peerless work on Jane’s Addiction as well as his vision for Lollapalooza but his solo work and the fever dream qualities of Porno for Pyros seem strangely undervalued. Kirk Hammett of Metallica gave an interview to Tim Virgin of WLUP-FM 97.9 (Loop 97.9) radio recently where he updated fans on the status of the bands’ next album, tentatively due in 2016. The interview was a precursor to last weekend’s performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago, IL and can be seen below:
Recently as a guest on Jamey Jasta’s podcast The Jasta Show, Hammett described the coming album:
“Let’s just say that the stuff that’s coming up is super riffy, super heavy… It’s a lot similar to [2008’s] ‘Death Magnetic’ but different in certain parts.”
“There’s a couple of songs that remind me of something on [1988’s] ‘…And Justice For All’, but the album doesn’t sound like ‘…And Justice For All’.”
Death Magnetic (Warner Bros/Vertigo), Metallica’s last studio album was released in 2009.
Lollapolooza South America has released its respective lineups for their Chile, Brazil and Argentina editions, each happening in March 2015.
The Santiago, Chile stop will be happening on March 14-15, 2015 at O’Higgins Park and the bill will feature Jack White, Kings Of Leon, Calvin Harris, Skrillex, Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters, The Smashing Pumpkins and Foster The People topping the bill. Other acts confirmed to perform include Kasabian, The Kooks, Interpol, Bastille, NOFX, Major Lazer, St. Vincent, as well as Chilean artists Congreso, Jorge Gonzalez, Fernando Milagros, Astro and Pedropiedra.
The Buenos Aires, Argentina stop will be happening on March 21-22, 2015 at Hippodromo de San Isidro and the bill will feature Jack White, Pharrell Williams, Calvin Harris, Skrillex, Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters, The Smashing Pumpkins, Foster The People, Kasabian, Bastille, Alt-J, Interpol, Major Lazer, St. Vincent, Nicky Romero, as well as Argentinian artists Pedro Aznar, Zero Kill and Maxi Trusso.
The Sao Paolo, Brazil stop will be happening on March 28-29, 2015 at Autodromo de Interlagos and the bill will feature Jack White, Pharrell Williams, Calvin Harris, Skrillex, Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters, The Smashing Pumpkins, Foster The People, Kasabian, Bastille, Alt-J, Interpol, Major Lazer, St. Vincent, Marina and the Diamonds, as well as Brazilian artists Pitty and Banda do Mar.
In related news, Lollapalooza has announced their German edition in Berlin, happening September 12-13, 2015 at Tempelhof Airport. The Chicago edition is happening on July 31-August 2, 2015.
