UPDATED: Change.Org Petition For Pantera Reunion Presses On

Pantera

UPDATED: The Change.org petition demanding the return of Pantera is nearing its goal. The petition started by Pantera fan Kirsten Topperwein of San Antonio TX dubbed “The Pantera Project” surpassed 5000 signatures, its original stated goal. The new goal 7,500 signatures and now boasts a Facebook group to continue to drum up support. As previously reported by Ghost Cult the petition is calling for Pantera members Vinnie Paul Abbott and Philip H. Anselmo to reunite the band, along with bassist Rex Brown; and offering guitarist Zakk Wylde as a possible stand in for Dimebag Darrell Abbott, who was murdered on stage on December 8th 2004.

The statement from The Pantera Project:

For the past 12 years one of the most influential heavy metal bands in history has remained silent. After that horrific night where the metal community lost one of its most beloved guitarists – iconic guitarist Darryl “Dimebag” Abbott, Pantera has been relegated to “legendary” and “history”.

Aside from Dimes brilliance on stage, he loved his fans – and he showed it every time he was on stage. His passion for his craft, and his fans truly made him a metal guitar legend.
As fans first and foremost – and out of complete respect and love, our heart went out to the band with all they endured, especially to Vinnie his brother for his great loss.

But we are asking for what all true Pantera fans only wished could happen: To see Pantera live on stage again. We KNOW that no one could truly replace Dime. But his ‘brother’ in Metal Zakk Wylde could step into those shoes and make the universe right again. Dimebag and Zakk were close, if anyone could do this and have the big guy’s blessing, it would be Zakk Wylde.
So in a shout out to all the metal heads across the world: please sign our petition asking the band “With all due respect” to please consider a tribute tour to pay homage to Dime for his incredible life and all he stood for. Let us see the mighty Pantera take the stage and rock the world one more time. At the end of the tour, decide where it goes from there. As die-hard Pantera fans, this is what we are BEGGING for.

The Pantera Project greatly appreciates and thanks everyone for all your amazing support and efforts to truly honor an amazing person and musician who helped change heavy metal.
That is perfect!!!! Than

Pantera Reunion/Tribute To Dime

The hope of many fans is that Pantera could someday reunite in some form or another. Wylde is often mentioned as possible member of such a reunion or tribute, volunteering himself to the band and his fallen best friend’s memory. While all the surviving members of the band have performed Pantera songs live, and Anselmo and Brown have gone on record promoting at least a tribute of sorts, Dimebag’s brother Vinnie Paul has repeatedly squashed any kind of talk of a reunion. At the same time a less vocal group of Pantera fans and artists prefer the band never reunite at all.

This past summer Mayhem Festival and Warped Tour co-founder Kevin Lyman went on record claiming he had a desire to make a significant offer to entice a version of Pantera to form and become one of the headliners for the currently defunct Mayhem Festival.

Bad Seed Rising On Touring

bad seed rising 2

For a brand new band on the music scene like Bad Seed Rising, they are getting a crash course on the music business and how things work. Despite their young ages (14 to 18 years of age), one area they have been building up experience is in the live arena, where they have landed shows and tours along the way.

Frontwoman Francheska Pastor shared her experiences so far:

I think we’ve done five solid tours now. We went out on a bunch of the Halestorm and Daughtry dates, and then we did a school tour where we went to a bunch of high schools to play there. Most of these are up and down the East Coast. The next one that we did was at this Camplify Tour at this camp. Then we went on tour with Saliva and Pop Evil. Then most recently we were on tour with RED and Adelita’s Way, and we won over the hearts of Adelita’s Way so they brought us on tour with them just a few weeks ago. Adelita’s Way are the greatest dudes ever. They’re awesome to chill with and they’re awesome.

Pastor talked about how one of their tour runs came from a band discovered them off of their song on the Spy movie. Apparently Bad Seed Rising is drawing attention in multiple ways and the movie has become one of the newest ways they have attracted new fans.

We have a show with Issues and Pvris. Pvris is like up and coming and they’re crazy good. We got onto that bill. They’re doing a hometown show in Atlanta, GA and we’re excited to play that. Tyler Carter found out about us through the movie called Spy. He saw the end credits of the movie and found out who we were and he added us to all of his social media and was like ‘oh my god…I love you guys!’

He eventually Facetimed me at 4 am in the morning and convinced me to have the band drive to the East Coast Music Conference Awards and he didn’t have to do a lot of convincing. He just had to tell me if it was possible or not to have the band drive to go there. It was also along the way on our tour with Adelita’s Way. It was awesome. All of the people that I listen to and we listen to in one setting and it’s very overwhelming. There’s so many idols in one area.

One event Pastor and her band have set their eyes on is the annual Vans Warped Tour, which is an event many touring artists have received their starts over the years. Despite some of the negative press indirectly received over the past year, she was hoping Bad Seed Rising could take part in 2016.

Oh definitely. It’s been a dream of ours to play Warped Tour. We’re terrified because Kevin Lyman…we saw the statement how he wants to an age limit on the people who are playing on the tour. I don’t think it’s going to happen but I just pray to god it’s not going to.

She had also shared her thoughts on the briefly debated (but since squashed) issue about an age limit on the participants on the Warped Tour. Being the members being under 21, she shared her thoughts on the matter.

I think if he were to do that, he’s eliminating the wrong people. Honestly they’re so innocent. We wouldn’t cause trouble like all of these older bands have caused in the past. Warped Tour (2015) was just a complete drama fest and it’s funny because it’s not even the younger people that are initiating these problems.

Kosha Dillz On Networking On The Road

Kosha Dillz Live At Vans Warped Tour 2015

Kosha Dillz Live At Vans Warped Tour 2015

Kosha Dillz is one of the newest faces to make waves within the music scene in 2015, and his DIY approach at spreading his name out to the masses has made inroads with fans on various levels. His unique blend of hip hop music fusing English, Hebrew and Spanish lyrics has caught the attention of many new fans along the way on Vans Warped Tour this summer.

His name got out through blogging on various music tech sites such as Hypebot, discussing his experiences with promoting at and for shows and tours. His outlook on how to spread the word about his music has caught the attention of many readers, who eventually transitioned into becoming a fan of his music and even coming to see his performance at one of the Warped Tour stops.

Kosha Dillz Live At Vans Warped Tour 2015

Kosha Dillz Live At Vans Warped Tour 2015

I’m trying to stay active during this time on social media and stuff. I’m giving shout outs to other bands and just being part of it. That’s what I like about it – being part of the entire get up. They’ve got 70 bands on here. I meet a lot of kids who’re like ‘man you played? I didn’t know you played…I wish I saw you play. I want to get your music anyways.’

There are other kids that are like ‘I look up all the bands before I come.’ Other people are like ‘I come because it’s Warped Tour.’ It’s a good thing. It’s something that people go to and never look the bands up.

Prior to Warped Tour, he performed at South By Southwest in Austin, TX, and he shared his experiences and his thoughts on the ins and outs of promoting within such a large event.

Yeah South By Southwest – you play ten times for 20 people each time, or maybe 200, and another for 100. On this one you’re playing for 100 or 200, or you could be jumping on stage with a bunch of other people, free styling with other bands for 10 people. It’s the same thing except you’re on a bigger stage and you have your own tent and people you’re taking pictures with left and right. That’s such a really cool experience,” he said.

Kosha Dillz. Photo Credit: Amelia Burns (via Facebook)

Back to Warped Tour, he adapted his past promotional tactics and his networking approaches and made it work with reaching unfamiliar attendees to checking out his music. Whether it was selling his CDs or simply talking to people about having his songs on a Warped Tour related CD compilation, he raised awareness of what he was doing and shared his experiences from this past summer.

It’s been cool to tell people you’re on the Warped Tour compilation. I’m autographing those. It’s a nice experience to be like ‘yo…I’m on the CD that everyone’s buying!’ I’m one of the last tracks to finish it off. It’s kind of an honor that the song I made with the guy after….what’s going to happen after 60,000 views on YouTube and now it’s on 100,000 CDs that you’re going to sell. How cool is that? So I get to show people pictures of these shows and they’re stacked. The shows are huge. How grateful should I be? It’s like a second or third chance I never got.

The thing is, when I got the call to do Warped Tour, I didn’t expect to get the call. I was working hard and I could hope. I put one foot forward saying it’s only show time and time again if you work hard and do it DIY that something steps up and appears and disappears. It’s nice to hear a lot of people say we deserve it, but also it’s up to me if I seize the moment and take advantage of this. That’s what Kevin [Lyman] mentioned to us.

kosha dillz 2

During his time on the Warped Tour, he got to experience a lot of new artists he was previously unfamiliar with and bonded with those he knew from before. He shared some of his personal discoveries amongst his touring mates.

Family Force 5 I think it is. They’re cool. I met them. Trace [Cyrus] from Metro Station – he’s a really humble dude. I like that they’re on the grind. Palisades – they’re my homies. They’re really dope. They’re from New Jersey. There’s a lot of New Jersey people. Candy Hearts are my friends. My homegirl Mariel [Loveland] – she’s dope. Le Castle Vania on the Beatport Stage, MC Lars, Koo Koo Kanga Roo – check them out. They’re amazing. Born Cages – I watched them play. New Beat Fund – they’re on Red Bull Records.

Riff Raff and Mod Sun are totally different. I love them both separately. I love their branding. I love the way they present their music, the colors and everything. There’s so much more. We live in LA. When’s the last time you’ve hung out with someone everyday for two months? I’m basically living with a bunch of people. I’ve never done that.

Zombies and Dinosaurs Everywhere- MC Lars

The oddity subgenre of nerdcore was once again represented at this year’s Vans Warped Tour, as Bay Area native MC Lars has made his way to bring his upbeat style of rhyming that a new breed a fans have grown to appreciate, as he is about to drop his latest album The Zombie Dinosaur LP.

He is excited to be taking part of this tour once again and shows immediately how excited he is to be part of this tour. “This is my third full summer. I always come to see it. Shout out to Kevin Lyman. One of the things is awesome is his nephew Evan is a big supporter. So that helps. Any time I get asked to do it, if I can I’d do it. There’s nothing like it and it’s so crazy. This year’s there’s so many new artists. It’s so weird to be like ‘oh yeah I’ve been doing this since 2011.’ It’s dope.

mc lars warped 2015

On previous Warped Tours, he has collaborated with Weerd Science, the hip hop side project of Coheed and Cambria drummer Josh Eppard. The two of them had collaborated on recordings in the past and he shared his thoughts on his earlier years on the tour with him.

My man Josh [Eppard] – he’s back in Coheed and Cambria. We’re thinking about doing more stuff together. That was really fun working with him because he’s such a great rapper, a great lyricist and a good guy. He’s crazy but I think all brilliant artists are crazy. Did you hear his Red Light Juliet II? Check it out. It’s great.

I think Warped Tour showed the Coheed guys he’d gotten his life back together. This tour’s so hard that if you could do it, it’s symbolic.”

Sticking to subjects ranging from video games and pop culture than the hard streets, MC Lars has lit up crowds over the years with his much talked about style fusing his vast knowledge of pop culture and literature with his laptop style hip hop. He talks about his upcoming album.

The record is called the Zombie Dinosaur LP and it comes out October 6th. So it’s kind of like the mythical beast, dragons, [and] dinosaurs. The album has a lot of mythological references. I’ve been at this since 2003. I’ve seen the whole world change. I’m still lucky I get to do this. I feel like the Zombie Dinosaurs are like the dragon. I relate to that.

mc lars the zombie dinosaur lp

Creating a style he calls “post-punk laptop rap,” he began in the Northern California pop punk circuit where he started performing his style of music. While his style was not always embraced at first, he found that over time, laptops became an integral part of a live band’s sound, whether they liked it or not.

Yeah I was early in the laptop game. I opened for the Dead Milkmen back in the day and the fans were like ‘yo! You can’t have a laptop on stage! That’s not punk!’ Now there’s not one band that doesn’t have samples at Warped Tour. It’s a prominent part of the set. It’s kind of weird. I called it post punk laptop rap, which now sounds like an antiquated genre but I still own it. It’s fun.

Another aspect behind MC Lars is that since his early days, he has released all of his music through his own label Horris Records, aside from distribution help in select overseas territories. While many have been swayed over time by bigger labels to sign, he has done things his way.

That’s a great question and I really appreciate you asking and saying that. My story’s kind of different. I played in punk and hardcore bands in the 90s. I went to college and studied English and I was able to go to the UK for an Oxford program to study Shakesphere. I’d always done rap to open for my punk band, but I met a bunch of indie and punk bands over there that I became friends with that led to finding a really cool manager and all of these things happening. It all came from being friendly and being like ‘yo I’d like to work with you and the fact that in 2003 or 2004, doing ironic smart nerdy rap was still a novelty. YouTube hadn’t killed off that whole thing. I was able to do it without a label and I was a big proponent of giving my stuff away for free, which I still am. Now everyone does that and with streaming you kind of have to give away your music.

I was on the forefront of that being that I uploaded my stuff on torrent sites to get download ratios to get beat programs. I see it having longevity as a DIY artist. It’s a four piece thing – great records, good touring, a piece of mind and your social media. You can’t let your social media take over everything. You need to make that 25% of your time. I kind of had balance. I’ve been lucky but I’ve also worked very hard. I can’t believe that this is my fourth record.

I’ve had labels distribute my stuff and get on board and help me spread the word, but I’ve never been signed to a label. I see so many artists who did sign to labels, some did very well but most of them have day jobs now. They didn’t sell that 500,000 they needed to sell, which in this genre of hip hop, punk and post hardcore, that’s a hard number to hit. It’s an adventure. You’ve probably seen a lot of bands on their way up and their way down. Labels can be great but most of the time it doesn’t work.

As the summer progresses, MC Lars will be staying busy by dropping another single and he is excited by the outcome from being on this tour.

Later this summer, my song ‘TriForce’ comes out, which is about growing up under the metaphor of Zelda. It’s all footage from my tour with MC Chris last year. Then I have three or four more videos coming out.

I’m really excited to have this album finally come out. I’ve been working on this for a year and a half. It’s really good. The ‘Dragon Blood’ song we’re playing this summer. We’re spreading the word.

Warped has taught me that being positive and working hard has concrete results. So props to this whole festival – I’m stoked to keep coming back.

Mayhem Festival Co-Founder John Reese Calls For Metal Fans To Unite

rockstar mayhem fest 2015

As the acrimony caused of the apparent disappointing returns of this summer’s Mayhem Festival spills into public forums such as online music websites, Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival co-founder John Reese has waded in to the fray. Offering an olive branch to fans and the bands, Reese’s plea comes after his partner Kevin Lyman aired his grievances about the fest and metal fans, which has led to speculation the fest is in jeopardy of not coming back next year, if ever again. Then followed by Slayer’s Kerry King making a spirited rebuttal in the media. Other bands playing Mayhem Festival were then prompted to comment, as well as many other noted artists in the rock and metal community. Reese’s comments can be read below:

Dear Fans of Heavy Music and Metal Bands Everywhere,

WE ARE ONE COMMUNITY. IT IS VITALLY IMPORTANT TO OUR COMMUNITY THAT WE ALL UNITE NOT DIVIDE! Without each others support the only thing that suffers is Metal as a genre!

In the midst of our most challenging year in 8 years of producing the festival, my partner Kevin Lyman made some comments that he has subsequently apologized for. Kevin is an honorable man and has given everything he has to the presentation of music and expanding the profile of countless artists! I am proud of our partnership and our results throughout the years! We have always tried to deliver a platform for artists to expand their fan base and the genre as a whole!

In saying this, various people involved with the 2015 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival and some from the metal community have understandably made some divisive comments regarding the event. The event has suffered as a result of these many comments. What’s done is done but I am here to say that heavy metal music is alive and well! I shouldn’t have to remind everyone that we as a culture have faced ostracism from the mainstream for decades and we should not let over-sensationalized media hype separate us!

I think we are ALL tired of all of the bullshit. I KNOW I AM!

Let’s move the conversation forward supporting each other not dividing.

Thank you to Slayer, King Diamond, Hellyeah, TDWP and every single one of the incredibly talented bands that have performed this year on Mayhem!

I would also just like to add a few other choice things for any media conspiracy headlines:

Can’t we all just get along!” – Rodney King 1994

Marilyn Manson did NOT cause Columbine!

Obama is not the Antichrist!! And he ain’t taking our guns!

Justin Bieber….. uhhhh… no comment!

Heavy metal does not cure cancer, but it is good to fuck to.

Hopefully I will see many of you at Knotfest 2015!

Kevin Lyman Suggests 2015 Mayhem Fest To Be The Last

rockstar mayhem fest 2015

In an interview with the Detroit Free Press, Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem festival organizer Kevin Lyman has intimated that the 2015 edition might be its last, and that the fest “may need to go away”. Citing a lack of new blood for ticket selling headline acts, the aging of classic-era metal fans and the cost of paying bands as reasons the festival is thought to be struggling with ticket sales of late, thus putting the future of the fest at the very least, in doubt.

Excerpted from the interview:

On this years headliner Slayer:

It was the best available for what we had to work with,” “We had pressure to keep the package at a certain price and make that work, and we had pressure on headliner expenses.”

On the future viability of the festival

I mean, Mayhem, it’s at risk of going away at any given moment…”

Kevin Lyman, photo by Craig Sengstock

Kevin Lyman, photo by Craig Sengstock

About the lack of new headline-worthy acts that are a legit draw to ticket buyers, and metal bands unwillingness to take a pay cut for the betterment of the tour

The bands at the top all demand a certain level of fee to be on tour. Unlike punk rock, metal never knows how to take a step back to move the whole scene forward”. “That’s how punk rock was. That’s how we nurtured punk rock. Bad Religion would take a little less than they could on their own to bring the whole scene forward, so we could make sure we had a good (touring) package around them. Metal doesn’t seem to have that concern, never has, never has since I was working in the clubs in the ’80s. It’s always about a me, me, me thing.”

On the aging of Metal fans:

What happened was metal chased girls away because what happened was metal aged,” “Metal got gray, bald and fat. And metal was about danger. When you went to a metal show, it was dudes onstage; there was some danger in it.”

On the 2015 Edition

Yeah, we had to condense it,” “The expenses of putting on those shows had gotten high, so we had to push it all into the concourses. They (venues) don’t want to build a fence outside (for third and fourth stages) anymore. Those things cost money.”

Interview: Juliet Simms – Back On The Saddle Again

juliet simms_lindsey_byrnes

During the kick off party for the Vans Warped Tour 2015 at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, CA, singer Juliet Simms sounded eager to get herself going once again on the tour that put her music out to the masses. Plus being that this time around, she is a veteran of this tour and a return to an environment she knows all too well.

“It is my favorite tour to do,” said Simms, sounding excited about spending her summer in a familiar place. “Everybody on the tour, whether it is production or the crew, Kevin [Lyman], everybody behind the scenes are like family. So going back out is like going home. That’s what it feels like. It’s because of Warped Tour I actually got my band’s name out there so that’s where I started. So it’s like I’m going home.”

juliet simms all or nothing ep_art

Unlike her previous experience as an acoustic performer, she returns with a full live band and to promote her new EP All Or Nothing.

“The last two times I did it I was acoustic. So I’m with a full band this summer. I’ll be at Journeys Stage and I’ll have a few surprises up my sleeve. You’ll have to come see my set to see it.”

Simms has also launched a campaign with Alive Music Project and the It Gets Better Campaign against bullying and support for the LGBT community with Black Veil Brides frontman Andy Biersack.

“Me and Andy Biersack, my boyfriend are doing a campaign to raise awareness about anti bullying and support for the LGBT and the Gay Men’s Choir of LA, and getting music back into the schools. Music and arts are getting cut from schools all across the country. It’s a sad day. We feel very passionate about all of it and we wanted to raise money for it. You can check it out here.”

Simms is no stranger to the Black Veil Brides audience, as she previously sang on ‘Lost It All’ on their 2013 album Wretched And Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones. Biersack repaid her with an appearance on her EP on ‘Not Broken Yet.’

She also shared her experience being on The Voice. “I was the runner up (in 2012). It feels like a million years ago. It was the time of my life. I did it. It was fun but I’m done.”

Despite her time on the show, she cherished that time and looking back at it did not come across as odd when looking back at that time in her life. “I lived the experience so it doesn’t feel weird. I don’t watch the show so I haven’t had the experience to feel that way. It was good for me. It brought in my fan base so I had a good experience on the show. Coming off of it is a whole different experience.”
