Guitarist, vocalist, and founding member of the Grateful Dead, and the leader of Dead and Company, Bob Weir, has died. His family shared the news via his Instagram account that Bob passed away while surrounded by loved ones due to an underlying lung issue after he beat cancer. Weir was apparently diagnosed with cancer over the summer, shortly before performing at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco for three shows celebrating the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary. Doubtless, the global Deadhead fan community is devastated by the news. The band had lost many members over the years, including fellow legends Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pig Pen” McKernan, and lyricist Robert Hunter. Weir also had many other bands and solo projects, and like his fellow Dead bandmates, made a career of marrying his activism for social issues and his art.
