We’ve covered a lot of Folk-adjacent music here, but not much true American Southern Folk. There is something quietly nice about a show that asks its audience to slow down, listen closely, and sit with history rather than rush past it. As random fate would have it, I got to see The Porch on Windy Hill for its return to Urban Stages for an encore run. Conceived and directed by Sherry Stregack Lutken, and written by Lutken, Lisa Helmi Johanson, Morgan Morse, and David M. Lutken, the production places American folk music at the core of its storytelling, which feels intimate, lived-in, and disarmingly relevant in the present moment. Continue reading →
