Living Colour released their cover of the Notorious B.I.G. track ‘Who Shot Ya’ a few weeks ago, and now we have the powerful video for our viewing pleasure. The original track was a b-side for Notorious B.I.G.‘s Big Poppa album back in 1995, and now the guys in Living Colour have given it new life in 2016 to raise awareness of the gun violence that is rampant here in the States. Vernon Reid adds: “Our version of ‘Who Shot Ya’ was initially an organic outgrowth of pure fandom for the work of the brilliant Christopher Wallace. Corey would frequently sing the song during soundcheck, so we worked it up. But tragically Biggie’s question has taken on new and urgent significance over the last year. The amount of people who die on a daily basis because of gun violence is unacceptable in a civilized society. The disproportionate use of deadly force in communities of color is equally unacceptable in a civilized society. We all feel paralyzed as to how we can meaningfully effect change, but at the least we can keep our voices raised in solidarity and not let this plight fade into the background until it happens again.”
Living Colour is a band that has never been shy about speaking their minds on controversial topics, and as you’ll see by statistics that flash across the screen, there is a real issue with guns here in the States. Not only do they post horrifying facts that the news won’t share, but they also flash the names of those who have died due to gun violence in the past, such Tamir Rice, Dimebag Darrell, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcom X.
