Jennifer Lopez stars in a new Netflix movie called Atlas. We were able to watch it last weekend, and we want to share some thoughts about it. Usually, we read reviews online before watch a movie, but for this one, we watched it before reading reviews. It wasn’t surprising that many hated it because the story itself isn’t something new, but for us, it was quite entertaining even though it wasn’t the type of movie that you’ll go back to even after so many years.

Just a tip, it’s best to check your wireless internet first before streaming this movie because we didn’t, and we encountered some buffering while watching this 2-hour film. Here’s what we think about this movie.

As we said earlier, the plot isn’t something special or unique. It’s a typical artificial intelligence (AI) trying to ruin the world vs. humans trying to save the planet. In this film, JLo stars as Atlas Sheperd, a military data analyst who specializes in AI technology, specifically an AI called Harlan. Harlan was developed to save humanity, but did the exact opposite, and so they have to stop him before he pulls off his dangerous plan of exterminating the human race.

The entire movie centered in the conversations between Atlas and a mech-equipped AI called Smith as they try to solve a big problem at hand: they’re trapped in Harlan’s alien world. Actually, this part is where the movie gets more interesting as their banters are fun to watch. So if you’re going to stream this any time soon, make sure to have a fast connection like fiber internet so you can fully enjoy the film.

Atlas is a very reserved person because of her past, but in order to initialize the mech, she’s forced to undergo a deeper neural link with Smith. She doesn’t want to open up, but she needed to do so in order to maximize Smith’s capabilities. This is where we saw her dark past and what made her who she is in the present. The mystery behind her past and how she’s linked to Harlan actually intrigued us.

Of course, the main draw for many viewers will be the action. And while the fight scenes aren’t exactly the best, they’re fun and functional.  JLo proves she can be a convincing action hero, especially when piloting a giant mech suit. Also, since it’s a Netflix exclusive, you won’t be able to watch it just yet on streaming platforms like Hulu, Sling TV, and HBO Max. But hopefully, it’ll be available in the near future so more people can watch it.

Our verdict? A 7/10. It’s not a waste of time watching this movie because it is truly entertaining, although there’s nothing so special about the story or the visuals itself. It’s just a typical AI-gone-rogue film, but the execution elevates it to something more. So if you’re still torn if Atlas is worth watching, this is your green light to go for it.
