Gunk-drenched avant-grind alien entity Squid Pisser are on the road, opening for GWAR on “The Stoned Age” tour for its duration, culminating on November 20th in Nashville Tennessee. Squid Pisser are touring in support of their new album Dreams of Puke, which was released on June 14th on the great SKiN GRAFT Records (Buñuel, Melt-Banana, Dazzling Killmen) and the band’s own Sweatband Records.
The album has been making a gooey splash (not just for its manic fusion of Punk, Grindcore and Sludge), but for its delightfully grotesque album artwork by painter Gregory Jacobsen (who also fronts Squid-Pisser-label-mates Lovely Little Girls). Controversy around the album art has led to strategic placement of parental advisory stickers on CD copies. Meanwhile the band’s distributor Redeye Worldwide were forced to make a vinyl reprint having received copies with mutilated and damaged jackets.
The casual creation of such hysteria could barely be more Punk Rock and Ghost Cult could not be more delighted to be teaming up with the band to share the video for “Vaporize A Neighbor” — a suitably demented visual companion to the track’s vortex of deranged, metallic riffing — directed by special effects artist Eris Deo.
Regarding the hullabaloo surrounding the album, the band’s Tommy Meehan had the following to say, “Squid Pisser began, years ago, as a dream. It incubated and festered and sloshed around in a terrible womb of poverty, anxiety and frustration for decades. Unrealized. Wanting… Craving birth… Dreams of Puke is the culmination of countless filthy influences, concisely executed with guidance that rained down from the beyond…”
On the album’s striking cover art Meehan adds, “Gregory Jacobsen was the first person I thought of when we were considering artwork for this album. His tone is a huge inspiration. We feel great admiration for his disgusting and delicious works. Whether it’s his paintings, his pen and ink stuff, or his aural contributions with his band Lovely Little Girls, Squid Pisser is just completely enamored by him.”
Jacobsen was clearly in his element putting together the artwork. He adds, “Tommy gave me the freedom to do what I wanted with the cover. I made it a celebration of ooze and discharge. The central character is like a prom queen… or maybe a god… in a body horror ritual ceremony. It’s all very spiritual!”
As well as leading Squid Pisser as they support GWAR across North America, guitarist Tommy Meehan will be performing twice a night on “The Stoned Age” tour, having been recruited by the headliners (and childhood heroes) as Grodius Maximus shortly before the release of Dreams of Puke.
In fact the incestuous coupling between Squid Pisser and GWAR doesn’t end there as Meehan reveals, commenting on promotional shots for the album. “Photographer Raz Azraai took the photo for the back cover of Dreams of Puke and captured Seth and I just doing our thing among flourishing ferns and fanciful fruits. Raz is a close friend and he’s actually rolling out with us as our second guitar player on this tour with GWAR….”
And just to show how seriously the band takes the controversy that’s been swirling around their album art, Squid Pisser will be performing in front of the cover of Dreams of Puke as their on-stage backdrop throughout the tour.
