It seems like it’s been an age since the first chapter of Void of Vision Chronicles EPs. Lust showed a band wanting to look outiside of their subgenres bubble in search of new and exciting sounds to bring to the table. Chapter 2 of their saga, Heaven (UNFD) continues on that trend in spades, showing how the band have developed since 2021 and what kind of mark they are trying to make on the scene.
With a metalcore band like Void of Vision it’d feel wrong to kick things off without a punchy start. ‘Berghain’ pushes everything into 5th gear from the start without stalling. Reminiscent of their peers in Northlane, Jack Bergin‘s raucous vocals are visceral, capturing attention from all over. Techy riffs add to the mix as Bergin unleashes some of the first clean vocals the band has performed to date. The introduction of clean to their sound clicks as if it had always been there.
Synths accompany the cacophony of the band in ‘Into The Dark’ creating a cyberpunk atmosphere, as it had crawled out of The Matrix dressed head-to-toe in a leather jacket and sunglasses combo. While this may on first impression seem like it should feel dated, the whole sound mixed in with the Architects’ ‘Doomsday’ influenced riff gives the music a new sheen. This all reaches a head when the track kicks into the chorus. “I don’t wanna feel the way you feel.” Bergin emotively shouts into the microphone. The mixture of these heavy sections alongside the melodic heartfelt choruses may have created one of the best metalcore tracks thus far this year.
Capping it all off with ‘Altar’, Void of Vision once again show their vision of interpolating different sounds into their own by inviting Creeper’s own Hannah Hermionie Greenwood along on vocals, using her incredible voice to bring the music onto a whole new level. It’s dramatic, it’s punchy, and it’s in your face.
Heaven carries on those themes and elements that Lust introduced. It feels almost as if the band are testing the waters in preparation for their first full release album and that body of music will certainly be one to look out for.
