September 16, 2026 marks forty years since Cro-Mags released The Age of Quarrel, the landmark debut that defined the metal-punk crossover and remains one of the most influential hardcore records ever made. Founding bassist and vocalist Harley Flanagan marks the anniversary with The Age of Quarrel: 40 Years of Quarrel, a full re-recording of the album featuring original guitarist Doug Holland, former Cro-Mags and Suicidal Tendencies guitarist Rocky George, members of Turnstile and Rise Against, and drum phenom Greyson Nekrutman of Sepultura. The record was produced and mixed by Arthur Rizk.
“Everybody’s Gonna Die” was written by Flanagan in 1985 and cut from the original album’s track listing, but endured as a demo-era fan favorite. It now takes its rightful place on the anniversary record.
Flanagan explains the motivation: “None of the people who played on the original record ever got paid, and none of us ever received an accounting of the album’s sales. For years, I tried to reunite the original lineup to re-record it and reclaim the rights to The Age of Quarrel and Best Wishes through the Copyright Reversion Act. But I couldn’t get everyone together to take back ownership of the music, and that window has now closed. Forty years later, everyone who wrote these songs will finally be paid through ASCAP and BMI, and the remaining proceeds will go to charity. I’m doing my best to make things right. These songs belong to the fans. I’m washing my hands of the past and trying to clear the bad karma from this record. Love wins. My quarrel is over.”
Cro-Mags recently wrapped up a European run and will appear at the Nightshift Party Weekend at the Iron Horse Saloon in Daytona Beach, Florida, on September 25.
