Coilguns guitarist Jona Nido comments, ““You and I in the Gap” stands out as the most spontaneous track on the EP. Throughout the seven days dedicated to writing and recording, our primary focus was on what we considered the “main” tracks. However, with a bit of time left, we embarked on the creation of “You and I in the Gap,” a track characterised by its almost mono-riff and heavy sound. On the last day of the session, we initially decided to forego producing it due to a lack of time for recording vocals. Little did we anticipate the magic that Louis (vocals) could conjure. In the late afternoon, he composed lyrics, worked quietly on his own, and at 1 am, just as all the gear was neatly packed away, he surprised us. He appeared with one of those child synths that require blowing into a tube to produce sound. Louis executed one take of pure noise, evident at the beginning of the track. Then, he grabbed the microphone and delivered a single vocal take, leaving everyone in awe of the performance, a moment we preserved exactly as it unfolded.

Out now, You & I In The Gap is the meeting of two giants of the European independent Alt/Hardcore scene – Birds In Row and Coilguns. Having created a solid following and reputation from their enthralling live performances and acclaimed studio offerings, the two outfits offer us a collaborative EP, written and recorded over 7 days in the studio, with all 7 players performing on all tracks.

The Birds in Row and Coilguns collaboration was born from a series of chance encounters and shared experiences. In 2018, both bands had the opportunity to play shows together, forging a connection that would eventually culminate in writing together. Subsequently, a joint tour, featuring Birds in Row, Coilguns, alongside KEN Mode, further solidified their friendship and laid the foundation to write together. Combining their roots in Laval, France (Birds in Row), and La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland (Coilguns), the resulting release You & I In The Gap sees two of Europe’s most hyped acts in independent heavy music create something truly special.

More from Coilguns:
Initially coming from the DIY hardcore scene, Coilguns have grafted their very own blend of pissed-off punk and ecstatic noise-rock. The history of the band is deeply bound to the development of guitarist Jona Nido’s own label – Hummus Records – home to 145 releases from Swiss artists of all sonic horizons. Though their last two albums were 100% self-produced, engineered and mixed by the band members, Coilguns drove last summer to end-of-the-world’s Oceansound Recordings in Norway with producer Scott Evans to track their 4th studio album, which is due to release in 2024. Only playing a handful of shows in 2023, the four piece hailing from La Chaux-de-Fonds has unleashed some upcoming material and crash-test their new show on stages of major European festivals. The band is known for its raw, uncompromising and euphoric live performances, proudly serving the dancing freaks and the crowd-surfing weirdos.

More from Birds In Row:
Trio Birds in Row have been at the forefront of the French hardcore genre for a decade. Making their debut in 2012 with You, Me & the Violence, the release rocketed them from Laval-based unknowns to the world’s stage. Their 2018 follow-up We Already Lost the World was an unyielding inferno of brazen ideas. Recent highlights include supporting Alcest, Cult Of Luna, alongside slots at ArcTangent and Damnation festivals.
