ALBUM REVIEW: Escarnium – Inexorable Entropy

Coming on like a thunderstorm in the middle of the night, we have the new cut from Brazilian death masters Escarnium. The new album entitled Inexorable Entropy (Everlasting Spew Records) delivers nine tracks that both push the boundaries of contemporary Death Metal while at the same time holding onto the tried and true dynamics that make Metal what it is.

First off, the drumming on this album is equal parts exhausting and punishing, with blistering blastbeats and rolls that take you down the street and back. All people who hold killer drumming in high esteem will dig what’s being laid down here. Everything is delivered tactfully while going from zero to sixty in 3.5 seconds, which in and of itself sounds impossible, yet here we are.

Another thing that stands out is the almost dichotomy created between the guitar and the drums. At times, the percussion will be at full throttle while the guitar parts are “moving” much slower and in some cases strumming their parts, creating this separation that comes across with such a cool feel. Don’t get me wrong: the guitars can crank it up with some pick-melting riffage, but what stands out the most is the crazy cool soloing that takes it to an almost Gothic/classical Death Metal level, mixing the old with new.

All in all, this new cut is permeated with an old world feel that conjures images worthy of horror movies, while at the same time delivering something that plays from beginning to end without really letting up.

I dare anyone, turn off the lights, put on the headphones, and spin this one in its entirety.
