According to legend, or Facebook, Wilson is not an internet band. No, they’re a real band from Detroit. They’re five guys in a van and they’re bringing the party, and their beards, back to your place with their debut album Full Blast Fuckery (Easy Killer/New Damage Records). I keep hearing them get called hard rock but that just doesn’t sit right with me.
The opening track ‘My Life, My Grave’ gets the album off to a strong start with a mic check and a scream from vocalist Chad Nicefield. You can’t help but feel the urge to get up and just do something. It might be moshing, headbanging, or maybe there’s a shot or two with your name on them. The point is, nothing’s going to stop you from having a good time. With lyrics such as ‘In every year there’s one day/When so many have passed I feel that there is no way/Around this…I’m getting around,’ this song sets the tone for the rest of the album to continue bringing the aggression, the energy, and a touch of that feeling of invincibility we all have in our younger years and still have fully functioning livers.
Forget Taylor Swift, ‘Better Off (Just Doods)’ makes breakup anthems fun again. Even though the lyrics aren’t exactly specific and leave a great deal to the imagination, we all know we’ve been there. That one person you can’t quite forget, who disgusts you, maybe an ex-something or other. Use this song to put all of your emotional trauma behind you and celebrate coming out on top. Life’s only gotten better since you two cut ties and it’s not going to stop anytime soon. Seriously, what the hell did you ever see in them anyway?
Clocking in at two minutes and forty-nine seconds, ‘Passing On The Left’ is the third track off of Full Blast Fuckery, as well as my favorite one in general. It’s a high energy song that just makes the listener want to grab life by horns. Or the throat. With its speed and power, ‘Passing On The Left’ is a true gem and could have easily been the first single off of the album, although I admit that such a short length leaves something more to be desired. I have a feeling we’ll be hearing a lot more of it in the future.
These boys make me feel like I’m in college all over again. Overall, this is a really solid album for anyone that’s a fan of good times, strong drinks, and beards or has one of their very own. Throw it on at a party and see where the night takes you. It’s one the best times you’ll have this year condensed into forty-one minutes. I still don’t quite know what to do with this band so bearded party metal it is! Now if you’ll excuse me, I think there’s a red Solo cup somewhere around here with my name on it.
