Melbourne cyberpop metalcore outfit, The Last Martyr, have just unleashed their heavy new track, “The Nihilist.” Featuring additional vocals from Brisbane emo rap artist, Rivilin, the track holds the warning that in desperation, humans will cling to something – anything – in order to feel a sense of control. “The track starts from the perspective of a cult leader luring in new members, desperate for answers,” says vocalist Monica. “Rivilin’s parts are from someone being indoctrinated via a ritual that skews his vision until he can see a new world in front of him. Adding a guest vocalist was a last-minute decision we are so glad we made. Rivilin added so much depth to the story which then inspired the artwork and visuals.”
Produced by Chris Lalic (Windwaker, Reliqa) and mastered by Mike Kalajian at Rogue Planet Mastering, “The Nihilist” made its national radio debut with a first play on triple j’s Short.Fast.Loud earlier this week. The track is accompanied by a cyberpunk visualiser by Pallet Design and an exclusive merch drop. It follows the post-apocalyptic love song “Antidote,” which was released in March, and feminist anthem “Burn It Down” released last November.
The Last Martyr have been consistently making an impact in recent years, particularly with their 2021 EP, Purgatory, which was met with critical acclaim. Several tracks from the EP, as well as stand-alone singles released since, garnered national and international radio play including on triple J and Triple M, reactions/reviews from Nik Nocturnal, Tom Williams (Stray From The Path), sync features on the AFL as well as spots on several Spotify editorial playlists.
The group have previously toured with hard rock heavyweights, Black Veil Brides (USA), SunkLoto, Story Of The Year and Hanabie, appeared at festivals like Unify Forever, Froth & Furry and BIGSOUND and embarked on their first headline run of shows last November. The band will celebrate the release of “The Nihilist” with an east-coast tour this May that includes an all-ages show in Frankston with Starve, headliners in Melbourne and Brisbane and an appearance at a Linkin Park & System Of A Down tribute event in Sydney.
