Detroit alternative rock veterans Sponge release a new single, “Self Inflicted Loss,” and announce their final studio album, Recuerda Tu Muerte (Remember Your Death), out October 2, produced by Vinnie Dombroski and Andy Patalan. Watch the stop-motion video now.
Thirty-two years after asking “Will I wake up, some dream I made up?”, Sponge closes their studio chapter with a record every bit as raw and direct as their debut. Recuerda Tu Muerte was recorded in Detroit at ATP Studios and House of Tone Studios, engineered by Andy Patalan and James Simonson, mixed by Andy Patalan, and mastered by Andy Patalan , no Auto-Tune, no beat detective, just feel over perfection.
Dombroski explains: “People used to say, ‘Well, you got your whole life to make your first record,’ and I’m like, ‘Nah, I’ve got my whole life to make my last one, too, right?'”
The “Self Inflicted Loss” video was created by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, the production house behind Robot Chicken, using modified 1970s Fisher-Price Adventure People action figures to portray the band. The animation took eleven days to shoot across stop-motion and downshooter clay techniques, with creative producer Ciara Waggoner drawing inspiration from Rotting Pinata and the band’s iconic candy corn cover art.
The album features cover art from Jon Dunivant of Theater Bizarre, photographed by Sal Rodriguez. The band hits the road with Candlebox in support through October and November.
