New England garage rock outfit, Salem Wolves, are due to release their new five-track covers collection, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 on October 3. The EPreimagines songs by Jawbreaker, The Replacements, Hüsker Dü, INXS, and Tom Waits, The EP will be available on all digital platforms, with a Bandcamp-first release in time for Bandcamp Friday. “Coming off our last record [The Psychotron Speaks, 2024 on Tor Johnson Records], we were just looking to do something fun and not so conceptual,” says Gray Bouchard (vocals/guitar). “We’ve historically been opposed to learning covers—mainly because we’re lazy and only know so many chords. But this was a chance to play the songs we grew up loving, the secret architecture of our taste and style.”
Tracked at Jim Eno’s (Spoon) Public Hi-Fi studio and mixed by Bridge & Sound Stage’s Alex Allinson, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 captures Salem Wolves’ onstage volatility and offstage affection for alternative lifers. Rather than faithful recreations, the band pushes each cut through their own “stadium punk” churn—thundering rhythms, feedback sturm und drang, and gang-vocal catharsis—aiming for something that feels immediate and unmistakably their own. At times cheeky but always emotionally earnest, the Wolves transform deep cuts and perennial favorites into the kind of sing-alongs you hear in a bad dream.
Formed on Massachusetts’ North Shore, Salem Wolves deal in hook-heavy, high-volume rock that nods to garage, punk, and post-punk without museum-glass reverence. The band has shared stages across New England with Diarrhea Planet, Death Valley Girls, L.A. Witch, JEFF the Brotherhood, Roky Erickson, King Khan and the Shrines, earned regional press for its “big, loud” sound, and built a reputation for relentless DIY output—singles, zines, and sweat-soaked shows that turn new listeners into lifers. Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 follows the group’s 2024 full-length and continues their run of restless, community-minded releases.
