Rolling Stone has released its list of the top 100 Metal Albums of all time, and it will surely spark some ire among fans. Curated by a list of the who’s who of proper rock and metal journalists such as Christopher R. Weingarten, Tom Beaujour, Hank Shteamer, Kim Kelly, Steve Smith, Brittany Spanos, Suzy Exposito, Richard Bienstock, Kory Grow, Dan Epstein, J.D. Considine, Andy Greene, Rob Sheffield, Adrien Begrand, and Ian Christe, they definitely had the right pedigree to choose the list. Black Sabbath’s second album Paranoid took home the #1 spot with typical names you expect Metallica, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Pantera, Ozzy Osbourne solo, and Megadeth all in the top ten. Other notables on the list include Avenged Sevenfold’s City of Evil at 100, Morbid Angel’s Covenant at 75, Slipknot’s Iowa at 50, and Metallica’s “The Black Album” at 25. Perhaps both disappointing and unsurprising at the same time is how few women-led bands and bands with women in them made the list with just Evanescence, Nightwish, and White Zombie, and Pig Destroyer rating making it. We have listed the top ten in descending order for you and you can also check out the full list the list below!
