Hardcore metal string quartet Seven)Suns celebrated the release of their new full-length album, For The Hearts Still Beating, last Thursday night at DROM here in New York City. This was my first time seeing the group perform live, and as a fan of both classical and metal music, their set left my jaw on the ground. The hour-long performance included all of their original compositions, as well as mind-blowing covers of ‘43% Burnt’ by The Dillinger Escape Plan, and ‘Quote Unquote’ by Mr. Bungle, and all I could say was “Wow” as each song came to a close. Violinist/composer Earl Maneein has previously stated that, “this is not soothing classical music by any means,” and he was not lying. This is a sonic assault on strings that has a precision and approach unlike anything we’ve ever heard before. After seeing it with my own eyes, it’s no wonder that the guys at Party Smasher Inc. jumped at the opportunity to release For The Hearts Still Beating to the masses, because Seven)Suns is doing something very special, and the world needs to hear it.
