The Magnolia Sessions is Anti-Corp Music’s live recording series capturing bluegrass, dark country, and folk singer-songwriter acts in an intimate outdoor setting beside a large magnolia tree at the Anti-Corp and Black Matter Mastering headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, recorded by label owner Dan Emery. The series has previously featured Lost Dog Street Band, Matt Heckler, Willi Carlisle, Cristina Vane, The Resonant Rogues, and many more, with numerous installments debuting on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts.
Ramblin’ Ricky Tate is a folk and country singer from Birmingham, Alabama, who came up busking on the streets of New Orleans before fronting a jug band and touring widely to preserve pre-war American music. His solo work has grown into something entirely his own, southern Gothic folk storytelling with a country twang, covering ground from devilish tales to love lost. His Magnolia Sessions record was tracked at a characteristic pace, with Emery noting that Tate was “absolutely dialed in” and nailed nearly every take on one or two passes.
Bosko Baker is a roots musician whose blend of country blues, ragtime, folk, and swing — what he calls “street swing” or “bozo blues” — draws from the traditions of Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Blake, Jimmie Rodgers, and Mississippi John Hurt. His session arrived in characteristically chaotic fashion: Baker drove in fresh from a festival campground, played a show the same night, then arrived at ten pm with bandmates Birdie Veilleux and Ely Rickard in tow. Emery recalls his wife coming out in her pajamas to shoot the promo photos. The result, he says, is the true essence of what The Magnolia Sessions represents.
