British Post-Punk legend Mark E. Smith of The Fall has passed away at age 60 after a long illness, according to a post on the bands’ website. The prolific songwriter and lyricist was an essential voice in the UK Punk and post-punk scene in the late 1970s and early 80s. He continued to be a creative force right up until this past year where he was forced to cancel many gigs due to poor health.
In his time in and out of The Fall, Smith’s brilliant observational poetic lyrics and snarling delivery made him unique and inspired legions of fans and imitators. The band produced over 32 albums, EP and compilation appearances in their career. Their most recent album was New Facts Emerge , released on 28 July 2017 by Cherry Red Records. Later in his career, he was a sought-after guest vocalist and songwriter, actor and personality. The Fall’s past band members have been performing as part of former guitarist and Smith’s ex-wife Brix Smith’s group, Brix And The Extricated. We sent our condolences and support to MArk’s family, friends, bandmates and fans at this time.
