Metallica has added even more new content to its third collection ever, “The Art of Metallica.” It’s been one year since The Metallica Black Box opened its doors with the first exhibition taking a deep dive into The Black Album, followed by 40 Years of Metallica. This latest exhibition digs into the band’s personal collection of artwork and includes rarely-seen drafts of album art, classic t-shirt images, gig posters, fan tributes, video storyboards, Hetfield sketches, and much more. Spanning all forty years and featuring iconic artists including Pushead, Tony Squindo, Dirty Donny, and so many more. The next series of archival material comes from their 2012 exhibition in Los Angeles “Obey your Master!”

“I’ve got so much respect for artists, whether it’s writers or actors, painters, dancers; anybody daring enough to throw themselves into the unknown of any kind of artistic endeavors and undertake a creative process, I hugely respect. But to be in a room full of 35 to 40 artists who are all showcasing work that was inspired by songs I wrote was pretty humbling.” – Lars Ulrich
Metallica has long respected the powerful relationship between art and music. The Exhibit A Gallery art show, “Obey Your Master,” explored that connection by inviting artists from the worlds of fine art, fashion, film, music, and skate to interpret Metallica’s songs in their own unique way. The concept of “Obey Your Master” was created in the mind of lifelong Metallica fan, artist, and owner of Exhibit A Gallery, Richard Villa III, along with co-curator Catharina Pedersen. The result was a diverse expression of emotion and inspiration, culminating in an event filled with paintings, posters, sculptures, and mixed media designs.
The Black Box is proud to present this behind-the-scenes look at the influential “Obey Your Master” show and the January 20, 2012, opening reception at Richard Villa III’s Exhibit A Gallery in Los Angeles.
